Kansas City Ridin' Dirty

Forgive the hip-hop reference dated by at least 5 years . . . However, it simply provides a nice transition into the fact that . . .

A GREAT MANY PEOPLE IN THIS TOWN DON'T HAVE THEIR PAPERS STRAIGHT!!!

From what I've heard this issues crosses cultural lines and might really represent harsh economic times. Nevertheless, recent totals reported by the KCPD speak to the illegality on local streets:

"One of every 12 drivers at checkpoint yesterday driving illegally"

Chief Corwin's blog dutifully notes:

Out of those 1,001, police made the following arrests and citations:

18 for driving while revoked (two of whom were persistent offenders)
63 for driving with no license at all
2 for DUI
28 for warrants
6 for narcotics

Are local streets safer because of these busts? For the most part, I think YES.

Then again, the prevalence of offenders on local streets should remind us that run-ins with the law span across Kansas City's diverse communities.

  2. What a bunch of horseshit.

These checkpoints are probably illegal and are certainly primarily for the purpose of collecting money.

  5. Sobriety checkpoints are one thing. You pull up, show them a license, and if you are sober you are on your way. Stopping people for the soul purpose of running them through the system is entirely different.

Only 18 were actually revoked. That is less than 2%. The Chief cites 10% by counting people with active licenses that were not in their possession at the moment and a variety of other offenses not related to the reason for the stop.

Probable cause is just too much of a pain in the ass I guess. That damn constitution always getting in the way of harassing law abiding citizens.

  7. 4:43 - No, the 63 people weren't cited for not having their license WITH them - they were cited for having no license at all. Like they never took a driver's test, never did any of the stuff regular law-abiding people do. Get your facts straight. Driving is not a constitutional right. It's a privelege.
