I try to give people the benefit of the doubt and that always turns out to be a mistake.
A few weeks ago, as a favor to some PR dude with a hot wife, I had to listen to Rick Bumgardner blather on about how diverse his event at the P&L District was going to be despite some real criticisms from other activists in the LGBT community . . . All while ignoring the hilarity of a gay dude named Bumgardner.
Anyhoo . . . It's a party so I figured he had a point about the LGBT fest having a "right" to get down and ignore their social conscience for a night.
Real Talk: The issues that the some folks in the African-American community have with the P&L District don't really apply to LGBT folks and I don't expect much solidarity among diverse communities in this town.
But then I hear about Bumgardner & Co. taking handouts from Mayor Funky for their party and that's when I really have to question their scruples. More to the point, it's kind of obvious that they're putting their party and profit above all else.
Let's not forget that during the "Life Changers" Controversy story that TKC broke last year Mayor Funky cast his vote to give funding to a group labeled as homophobic by an overwhelming majority of the local LGBT Community. Overall, Mayor Funky is not a friend to LGBT folks in Kansas City and it's very important to remember that he's taking advice from Jeff Roe -- A dude who is also accused of launching anti-LGBT attacks against his one-time opponent Kay Barnes. Roe's political machine pretty much championed the "San Francisco Values" theme and he is knee deep in the Funkhouser Administration hot mess but still Bumgardner & Co. seem don't show any hesitation because their party is (seemingly) more important than anything else. The points that more socially conscious critics of Pride made now seem more salient than ever.
Without at doubt now I don't feel any qualms about noting that . . .
THIS KANSAS CITY GAY PRIDE FESTIVAL LOOKS MORE AND MORE LIKE A DECADENT PARTY WITH NO REAL SOCIAL CONSCIENCE WHATSOEVER!!!
Every political stance they take seems more about promoting their lifestyle and not really standing behind any principles.
The fact that they're grabbing ankle for the Funky Administration is sadly pathetic and, on the opposite end of the spectrum, I can only wonder how Mayor Funky's Conservative supporters feel about the association.
Of course politics makes strange bedfellows but this pairing completely reveals that desperate people have a way of finding each other in the Kansas City political scene.

Mayor Funkhouser Helps Announce New Venue for Pride
The Show Will Go On At Riverfront Park
Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser, Port Authority Executive Director Vincent Gauthier and Pride President and Pride Week coordinator, Rick Bumgardner will be on hand for a media conference today, May 21, at 2:30 PM at The Pavilion at Richard L Berkley Riverfront Park.
“When my office learned that Pride was in need of a new venue we immediately got on the phones,” said Mayor Funkhouser. "I am thrilled that Pride and the Port Authority were able to work out this solution. The Kansas City spirit is to help out a neighbor, and this is an excellent example of that spirit in action."
“The Mayor’s Office and Port Authority have been a tremendous help in facilitating a new venue for Pride after Penn Valley Park was ruled out due to recent rains. As a result of their efforts, we are excited to announce our move to Riverfront Park for 2010,” said Pride President, Rick Bumgardner. “When we were scrambling to find a location for our festival – they called us. And for that we are so grateful. It’s going to be a great year for Pride!”
“The Port Authority has a tremendous vision for the riverfront,” said the Port Authority’s Gauthier. “We are enthusiastic about bringing another group down to see all the momentum going on there.”
Kansas City Councilwoman Beth Gottstein also applauded the decision. “Pride is an institution in KC and I hope this year even more people attend the festivities,” said Gottstein.
Pride is a week-long celebration and educational opportunity for the LGBTIQA community. With the theme of “Then. . .Now. . .Forever,” this year’s Pride Festival Week will be held May 31 - June 6, 2010.

ReplyDeleteI'm upset that part of the festival will be at P&L. I won't be going to anything they hold there because I think it IS a LGBT issue because not just white people are queer. I'm pretty disappointed in the planners but this city manages to fuck up lots of good things so it's just par for the course.
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand what you have an issue with.. A festival that the city sanctioned lost it's home due to uncontrollable circumstances two weeks before the festival date... the city reached out to the festival organizers to help in finding a new location, and just because the city is ran by a mayor you believe to be homophobic you are going to bash the Pride organizers for taking the assistance or being faced with cancelling their event two weeks from event date? Regardless how you feel about Funk you have to know there are many LGBT employees of the city and if I were one of them I would be really pissed at what you've said here. Seriously man.. get a life!!!
ReplyDeleteImagine all the Subaru's parked down by the river. I think they should call this the mud hole festival more fitting :)
ReplyDeleteew. gross.
ReplyDeleteBut probably correct.
May - no offense, but you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. Why don't you contact Pride and get the facts. Your unsubstantiated claims make you look less than informed. Which you obviously are.
ReplyDeleteTony-
ReplyDeleteYou're wrong on this one. Hate the mayor not the minority. Don't let your anti-funkhouser feelings get in the way of your support for communities in need. Thanks.
And another thing May. . .people like you would have our community closeted and quiet. People like Pride are not afraid to take our festival to the masses - to be out there and proud of it. Educate yourself - it will set you free.
ReplyDeleteT--I think the term you are searching for is "social conscience", not "conscious". Another example of why blogs will never fully replace mainstream print media.
ReplyDeleteWhy do a-pirates and female m-divers feel the need to publically celebrate their mental disorders. Keep it to yourselves. Who cares. Seriously, you must have a mental disorder if your proud of the fact that you stick you d#$k in another guys A$$.
ReplyDeleteWhere are the Muslims when you need them?
See who you are helping May? Idiots like 1:41. Keep putting down Pride and these folks will keep rearing their ugly heads.
ReplyDeleteHundred dollar fine for using the trite newsism, 'politics makes strange bedfellows.' Double fine when saying it in a gay rights story.
ReplyDeleteThe defenders of the current PRIDE regime keep trying to wrap themselves in the flag of social justice, when they are just trying to make a buck -- subsidized with our tax dollars.
ReplyDeleteThe festival is not a non-profit entity. It should not be treated as a non-profit entity. Bumgardner is just a scavenger who is trying to get rich, and not a defender of the LGBT community.
Furthermore, the mayor surrounds himself with homophobic-bigots, and does the work of homophobic-bigots, such as, when he voted in favor of funding "Life Changers" or appointed Francy Semler (who hates everyone) to the parks board.
Funkhouser should not be forgiven for these past acctions or current alliances with scum like Jeff Roe.
I do not want to see my LGBT brothers and sisters used in such a filthy manner.
1:41 - Uh, I hate to be the one to break it to you but it's 2010 not 1955. I'm pretty certain that gays are just one of many groups on your hate list. Put down the swastika and bible for a few minutes and think about the vile crap you wrote. What kind of person does that make you?
ReplyDeleteTony has it wrong, it's funk who is bending over.

ReplyDeleteAgreed TKC Referee
ReplyDeletePlease I beg of you don't ever mention Mayor Funky in bed with anyone not even his wife. That brings forth a vision that I would not be able to get out of my head even with mind numbing drugs.
ReplyDeleteThe mayor makes this whole city mind numbing.
ReplyDeleteOnce again, the mayor is taking credit for a deal that another city department worked out. And I believe he got the Pride folks the park for free, when they were going to have to pay Parks and Rec a fee for using Penn Valley. Once again, the mayor is buying support with our tax dollars.
ReplyDeleteLike ANY comment, if you press an issue into the faces of most people, they will turn negative, even OUTRAGOUSLY NEGATIVE, if you challenger their moralities.
ReplyDeleteExpect HATE from those who abhor your ethics. So predicable. Don't even get indigant for you know it aws completely predicted.
The real issue about gay rights is when gay people will grow tired of putting their penises in str8 people's faces? The issue will go away when they quit trying to pick fights, IMHO!
I'm not sure the Mesxicans will be anymore successful much as they love to yell, "Machete!"
We will see what works, and what doesn't work. The leaders like Obama and whoever is the Mex pres, whose name ins not important to me...
they seem to think that softer words do better than protests like "Machete!!!!"
I don't know. What do YOU think? This is pretty important stuff,
IMHO, far more important for the Battle-star operational status TKC than who is nominated as mayor of stupid KCMO (as if most metro people even care who !!!!)
Since homophobia doesn't exist in all cultures, its only cultural & is not human nature, & therefore not real. If you're daddy taught you to hate fags, then you're a good boy. Now Sit!
ReplyDeleteI'm seriously pissed off that Pride is moving this year.
ReplyDeleteEspecially after booking the "official pride hotel" - which is located on the Plaza, and planning on using the KC Strip Trolley service to get back in forth during the wee hours when cabs are too costly and I don't want to drink and drive.
So now, we're either going to have to drive to the venue every day or spend $30-40 on cabs. This sucks!
Radioman KC, there's nothing the least bit humble about your opinion. You're a narcissist and it shows in most everything you spout off about. Tony is a much better blogger than you are. Of course, you already know this and it bothers you that you're a big nobody who will always dwell in his shadow. It's not that Tony is a great writer, it's that you're really that talentless.
ReplyDeleteThere are free shuttle buses from the bars to the Pride event. The Maxx bus line also runs right down to City Market and is walking distance to the festival. Check www.gaypridekc.com for information closer to the event on transportation and parking. No one will have to spend money on cabs unless they're averse to riding on a bus with other people.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip, but KC doesn't exactly have the best bus system. For people who are visiting from out of town the direct shuttle from the pride hotel was a nice option.
ReplyDeleteI don't have the most faith in my drunk friends to be able to figure out the Maxx's few and far between bus schedule.
Slicey, you did not expect the organizers to spend some mone did you? This event is about MAKING money for THEM, not SPENDING money on YOU!
ReplyDeleteSo buy your beer wrist band and shut up!
