So, without another riot of Black teens on The Plaza there's really nothing more than a media feeding frenzy afoot. TKC Tipsters led the coverage and were able to note this story before it was on local news . . . But readers of this blog already know that and that's why they keep on reading.
What's funny to me know is that media has tragically shifted this story completely to a racial crusade to save white ladies. Which is why I've adorned this post with some of my favorite photos of the broads on The Hills.
The best urban legend that should keep Kansas City Middle-Class white people in the suburbs for years to come is the SPOOKY STORY OF THE YOUNG WHITE WOMEN HARASSED!!!
It's a frightening tale but to be sure but c'mon . . . The point of the anecdote is do nothing more scare white people given that, thankfully, she seems to have come out of it okay.
Still, I don't want to downplay anyone's suffering. I want to live in a world where everyone can walk freely without harassment but I know the end result of all this mess is going to be a crackdown on Kansas City's African-American youth without much regard to their intention.
So as the Plaza Riot News Cycle starts to slow down we're left with an abysmal fact:
FOR THE MOST PART BLACK AND WHITE PEOPLE IN KANSAS CITY CAN'T SHARE THE SAME SPACE!!!
And even worse . . . Kansas City media are mostly interested in catering to the racial angle with little representation of people of color other than to highlight them as perpetrators.

ReplyDeleteAs someone who worked really hard at a small state school and got to leave Kansas City to attend an Ivy League grad school... I have to comment. Many of the students here are black, I have a black professor... Some of them even talk with a thick Jersey accent... but they're smart as hell. I don't think being black has anything to do with success or failure... Having no role model, a father locked in prison, a school system that breeds a disdain for education and authority... I think these could be issues. I've lived in the white meth/pot addicted suburbs long enough to know whites just wear their failure differently.

People, white or black, have the right to defend themselves. If I see a gang of 15 (no matter what race) coming down on me and my girlfriend, I will protect her and myself with every legal means possible. Which means my 15 little buddies will be pulled from their concelment and take action. Action that will be justified in any court of law. I suspect this behavior might happen once or twice without the public taking action. First, the recent events on the Plaza cannot be explained simply...not the motivations of those inciting the riots, nor the response of local media and authorities. Second, many of the comments posted demonstrate misunderstanding and intolerance and cannot contribute to the transformation of this conflict. It cannot be denied that Kansas City has a tragic history of racial segregation and tension. And many grievances of our past continue to plague many in our community.
ReplyDeletePlease let us attempt to use this recent occurrence as an opportunity to address the issues that affect our entire city, and seek an understanding of the perceived "other." Look to the good that so many groups are doing already in our city. Take Christmas in October, a project in which hundreds of local contractors, painters, plumbers, electricians, and other business people donate their time, money, and skills to improve housing in low-income neighborhoods every year. These projects are not about race, gender, class, religion, or any other factor that has been known to divide us. These projects are about the inherent dignity of every person and the generosity of so many people who work to better the lives of others. Perhaps the media and the citizens of Kansas City will take notice of the good that can come of our working together. I hope this blog continues to inspire discussion, but I believe we are capable of discussing these serious issues in a respectful manner.

I have to say i hated Kansas all you ever see is black guys wit white girls dont get me wrong its nothing wrong with that but at the end of the day the mentality of the people was fucked up excuse my language thats how im feelin.
