There was a slew of violence over the weekend and people were killed.
However, because these destructive incidents didn't take place among white people or near a shopping district there was little interest by the mainstream media.
Instead, the illusion that this was a "peaceful" weekend was allowed to persist despite the fact that nothing could be further from reality for many innocent bystanders, crime victims and denizens of this town's urban core who consistently don't merit the same coverage or concern of Kansas City's politicos or mainstream media news providers.

No one outside the neighborhoods care because the residents and victims don't care enough to assist the police in ending the violence & crime.

I'll agree with Tony on this point. Nobody, including crime victims care about crime-that is if you live on the Eastside. Its been my experience that the police honestly do their best to get the criminals off the streets. The judges, on trial day will scald police and victims for harassing the poor criminals and more often than not, release the criminals from custody. Crimes considered nonviolent will net the criminal a few days in jail at best. So, as a victim, why should I care? Time to sell my home take the loss and get the hell out of here!

ReplyDeletesodastyles-its a popular misconception that (ALL) Eastsiders tolerate thugs. Independence Mo has its share of criminals (Meth Capital) to deal with. The largest problem lies within the criminal justice system itself. Imagine my surprise to learn a criminal involved in a high speed pursuit crashes into my car causing a life threatening injury (fractured sternum) to me, yet this crime is not considered a violent crime. Now, consider victims/witnesses of crimes much worse (murder) coming forward to help prosecute while judges will impose a 3 year prison term (Shauntay Henderson) for murder. Or, the prosecution falls apart for whatever the reason. Then what? Call the Tips hotline instead? That may work in some cases, but more often than not police and prosecutors still need witnesses to testify. Once you're in a position where you risk your own life to possibly put a criminal away, you'll have a different take on this issue.
ReplyDeletePerhaps Independence became known as the Meth Capitol, not because it had more meth cookers than any place else, but because of the publicity that resulted from Independence Cops actually finding and shutting down the labs! My bet is the only reason other towns in the area didn't get meth publicity is due to inept police departments that didn't bother catching meth cookers.
ReplyDeleteIndependence became the Meth Capital because they did not have the resourses or enough police officers to patrol the city. At one point in time back in 2007 IPD only had 12 officers patrolling on any given shift. Those numbers have improved greatly with many new police recruits hitting the streets. I cannot explain why most JaCo meth cooks seemed to congregrate in Independence. Whether it was a police shortage or just a coincidence is beyond me. Someplace has to be the capital-Independence just seemed to have the bad luck this time around.

The fault is with the criminals. Don't try to put racism where there is none. We have enough (going BOTH was) already.

ReplyDeleteSodastyles-I'd love to see the Black Panthers or any ADHOC group against crime for that matter help police our streets. As far as crime in Independence goes, you have about the same population as that on KC's Eastside so naturally your crime rates would be lower. No disagreement here-I've been searching the Independence area for possible relocation. I've also been involved in several court cases in which I was victimized. All this talk about showing up in court to follow through on prosecution is BUNK. The thugs, regardless of their crimes get a cookie cutter sentence for various crimes. The man who injured me, and destroyed my car while fleeing police got 120 days in prison-only because he was already on parole for something else. While I personally do not fear this man, I certianly do understand the mentality of some who would be afraid to come forward as witnesses for the prosecution. Stop Snitchin? That I do not understand.
ReplyDeleteDear Mr. Tony: Thanks, as always, for keeping the city "up to speed" on an issue much of the city's leadership wants to forget. Speaking of forgetting, it is getting tough in this town to get crime stats--but by my count we are up to 30 homicides in 2010--23 black and 7 white/asian/hispanic. In 2007, before the current crime surge began, we were at 22 at this point.(15 black and 7 white/asian/hispanic.) Now, DC has just had the lowest homicide total in 50 years and New York had the lowest total since stats started being kept in 1963--so no more nonsense that this ongoing explosion of violence in the black sections of KCMO is due to the recession.
