A common misconception touted by public officials that is never corrected by the media is the fact that ANY "RENEWAL" OF A TAX REPRESENTS A NEW TAX!!! It's a testament to the interest that EVERYONE has in maintaining the status quo that this fact of life is never pointed out.
A look at reality and not just the sales pitch is the appropriate way to look at the Kansas City Police Sales Tax.
Yael T. Abouhalkah has been doing some great work documenting the subject but my bearded, nerdy, timid colleague is too afraid of the public to allow an open discussion of his findings.
First he looks at historic support for the tax and what it pays for along with Mayor Funky's dopey Schools First idea.
And then Yael declares "KC's next public safety tax for buildings, not cops and cars"
This is an important point considering that THE KCPD IS TALKING ABOUT A $105 MILLION AUTO BUDGET!!!
I'm not sure if this involves getting a whole bunch of cars with 22-inch rims in order to engage in some kind of "outreach" program but with that kind of cash the possibilities are limitless.
In any event, very much like my hero, Richard "Lowtax" Kyanka I have little patience for politicos or anybody wanting to raise taxes during The Great Recession. Still, I understand that this town rarely challenges authority or the cacophony of local, pro-tax voices.
It's just important to put this move in perspective in light of so many other tax-y efforts on the horizon . . . If Kansas City's Po-Po wants big money for cars and Mayor Funky wants cash to save his political career . . . The public, neighbors and community members might also want to weigh in with their wishlist . . . Since it's their money after all.
THE KCPD IS TALKING ABOUT A $105 MILLION AUTO BUDGET!!!
ReplyDeleteHey Tony! Those fucking Batmobiles ain't cheap!

ReplyDeleteQuit asking for handouts.
Let's see some results first.
Here's Kansas City government....
ReplyDeleteWe need more Money for FEWER services.
JUST say you've had enough with government waste just vote NO to more Taxes.
I wonder if Kim Carlos has enough time to lobby or is she still reeling from her husband stepping out with her "best friend". I guess making money off the backs of kc taxpayers wasn't enough to keep her hubby home and happy.
ReplyDeleteWow.
ReplyDeleteLow blow.
She certainly deserves it though.
Coonte.
Did KCPD ever get all the cars they bought out of STORAGE.
ReplyDeleteOr is the taxpayer still spending money on the storage of new cars?
Money cannot cure incompetence.
ReplyDeleteEveryone, Tony included, seems to have failed to notice this would not be a new tax. It would be a renewal of a current one, and you wouldn't pay anything more than you're paying now.
ReplyDeleteThat's the whole point we were told the TAX would last a short period of time NOW let it end.
ReplyDeleteVOTE NO! Do Not renew the TAX.
Up front we were told it would end (so people would support it.) Now let it end like we were told.
let's end ALL the taxes (city, county, state, federal - the whole fucking shebang) and start all over again.
ReplyDeletefire all the government workers and let 'em reapply (city hall, schools, fire, police).
don't know what we'll do for coverage in the meantime, and don't know who would staff the reemployment offices, but what the hell. rhetoric doesn't need a home that makes sense.
What an extremeist !!!!
ReplyDeleteLet's start by keeping promises.
we were told the safety sales tax would end.
Let it end.
Then reexamine it's need. And put it to the voters.
No need to throw the baby out with the bath water.
