Handling The Star's Misplaced Priorities

Today, once again, The Kansas City Star reveals that it really is an elitist, uncaring and completely out-of-touch organization.

In a nearly nonsensical opinion, the Editorial Board advocates more resources for bicycles.

"KC needs 100 miles of new bike lanes by 2011"

Advocating for this kind of white privilege for hobbyists is completely unforgivable. Sadly, local cycling d-bags love to throw around a great many minorities (mostly Latinos) using bikes without acknowledging that those people are unrepresented in "cycling advocate" circles. Even worse . . .

KANSAS CITY'S BIKE TRAIL BUILDING SO FAR REPRESENTS A WISH LIST OF ELITIST, MIDDLE-CLASS HIPSTERS AND NOT THE NEEDS OF URBAN, WORKING POOR DENIZENS OF THIS COWTOWN!!!

Local cycling advocates are nothing more than another special interest and their sense of entitlement is only outdone by the ignorance of their own (white) privilege. Kansas City Cycling isn't a "green" hobby that benefits the environment or anybody but the members of this selfish, local clique.

  1. Really offensive Tony.

My friend, who lives in KC, died because he was going to work on his bike. If there had been proper bike lanes it could have been avoided. He was not an elitist, he just couldn't afford a car and he was trying to get to work...

  2. You also have to consider the fact that bike-friendly cities attract MORE elitist middle-class hipsters, adding to the tax base necessary to support the mythical "working poor".

  3. I ride bicycles religiously, to and from work and for recreation. Bike lanes do nothing to solve these problems. Drivers don't respect them, just like they don't respect cyclists or other drivers on the road. Just keep things the way they are. I'm not getting off the streets. Cars can just go around me.

They should take whatever money they planned to use for bike lanes and use it instead to pay to educate motorists on traffic laws. Car drivers are the most dangerous people out there. A far greater hazard that cyclists.

  4. You are right Tony, poor minorities don't ride bikes. Too much exercise involved. They prefer the comfort of their Cadillacs and Lowriders. Stop profiling, biking is for everyone.

  5. Wow, TKC claims that poor minorities are lazy. Just because you get winded playing video games, doesn't mean that most people of all races and socioeconomic backgrounds wouldn't benefit from this.

  6. The best thing is that you DON'T know who is visitng The Star today. Why don't you call McClatchy and find out?

Also this city needs more bike trails, dipshit. It has hardly any that are worth a damn.

  7. For at least the first 10 years, bike lanes in KC would be death traps for cyclists.
The current bus lanes can be terrifying enough, with plenty of non-bus speeding traffic.
I ride daily. There's plenty more important things for KC to be spending "money" on.

  8. Bike lanes integrated with roads are not an optimal solution. Better would be a separate infrastructure so cyclists and pedestrians can travel in peace. The added width of a bike lane encourages higher speeds by cars, which is bad (speed a factor in most accidents and contributes to driver stress).

  10. has anyone noticed where we are? IN THE MIDDLE OF THE MIDWEST, where it's bicycle weather about only 50% of the year.

this green / exercise / bicycle shit comes from california. let those nuts keep it to themselves and leave the rest of us alone.
