Like it or not, Acting City Manager Troy Schulte is now operating in the realm of Kansas City politics and his years of experience as a very knowledgeable bureaucrat won't help him much.
Most people like Schulte but that won't last for long. My prejudices lead me to assume that most tall white guys are secretly racist . . . But like I said, people of all backgrounds genuinely seem to like the dude.
There's a point of contention on Schulte's so-far sterling reputation . . . Many of my KICKASS MAST TIPSTERS claim that he was one of the architects of the Fire Dept. MAST Hostile Takeover deal. Schulte fan's ask for proof . . . The claim is that Schulte worked closely with Local 42 insiders in order to provide data and numbers for their takeover attempt . . . Whether or not that fell within his job duties is up for speculation. I don't know and it doesn't really matter.
THE POINT HERE IS THAT TROY SCHULTE IS KANSAS CITY'S POLITICAL GREAT WHITE HOPE!!!
I like the fact that Schulte fans are trying to distance him from Mayor Funky because they want him around after the next election cycle . . .
MEANWHILE . . .
MORE THAN A COUPLE OF HIGHLY PLACED CITY HALL SOURCES VOW TO REMEMBER SCHULTE'S COMPLICITY IN THE SO-CALLED "PALACE COUP" THAT OUSTED THE FORMER CITY MANAGER WITHOUT THE BLESSING OF THE REST OF THE COUNCIL IN A SOMEWHAT SURPRISE MOVE!!!
Unfortunately, after the next election cycle Schulte's biggest fans - Northland Council people Deb Hermann and Bill Skaggs won't be around to protect him. And despite Schulte's great rep and wide support . . . Mayor Funky has always wanted to pick his own City Manager.
It seems that it's Troy Schulte to save himself and Kansas City's budget.
To wit . . .
CITY HALL INSIDERS ARE HOPING THAT TROY CAN TRIM TENS OF MILLIONS OFF THE CITY BUDGET IN THE NEW YEAR!!!
If he comes close, he'll be considered a hero.
However, this isn't the first time Kansas City has had great expectations.
Still, on this subject the mostly misinformed ramblings of pundits and radio dorks like Chris Stigall don't mean much. There are angry white dudes from the suburbs who will support Schulte just like they still stand by the Mayor regardless of any real political skill or knowledge . . . Their talk is mostly meaningless other than for entertainment purposes. What's more important is Schulte's ability to win over the Council and attempt to cut the budget while keeping at least a modicum of people happy.
The strange thing with local politics is that he can perform perfectly and still lose his job.
Believe it or not, I'm rooting for Troy and I hope he is able to utilize his renowned skill and forthright style to address Kansas City's serious financial concerns. Sadly, the alternative to Schulte's success would be more divisiveness at City Hall while little gets accomplished and this cowtown continues to lose money.
No city manager could do the right thing and survive in KC. The rent seekers will never let up.
ReplyDeleteHermann and Skaggs will be gone but so will Bully Boy (voted out). Riley is gone and Gothstein, Marksuson, and Sanders-Brooks will be voted out so there will be at least 7 City Councilpersons who will be coming in new and thus Schulte has a chance to show what he can do and the old ignorance that kept Cauthern in will be gone. Except for councilman not-so-Sharp.
ReplyDeleteThis post is confusing, Tony. Are you a fan of Troy's, or carrying the message from the anti group? If you look honestly at Shulte's record, it speaks for itself. He's a PROFESSIONAL, something Wayne wasn't. He gets numbers and budgets. He didn't "help" with Mast, one way or the other; he just did his job. Likewise when Wayne was fired... Troy was not complicit, but merely stepped up to the job when asked. Give the guy a break and a chance to do the right thing. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at what someone of Troy's skill and character can do for this town. God knows we need all the help we can get.

ReplyDeleteTroy was maneuvering in the background like any feckless back stabber would. He is a very odd man as he has no professional scruples. He will stand and deliver the truth AS YOU WANT IT TO BE, then he will do the same thing to the next information seeker even when he has to lie to make that person happy. He can say each prevarication with a straight face. He is not the standard bearer of good government, he is Larry Haskell. He will collapse in his new position because he does not have a reliable moral compass.

ReplyDeleteThankfully we have a labor-friendly city manager in place. As the city navigates through some difficult decisions, I am very glad, as a proud union member, that Mr Schulte is at the reins. He has my support.

As a union member I thank you for your solidarity. I hope that Local 500 stops getting it in the rear because there is just so much money in the city coffers and stronger unions have the upper hand.
Troy Schulte is not the person for this job. He is weak kneed and will bow down to threats, poor thing.
