INTERNET SUPREMACY: KCFREEPRESS.COM COMPLETELY FORGETS THAT PEOPLE OF COLOR LIVE IN KANSAS CITY TOO!!!
Wow, and I actually thought I was going to have some competition.
Turns out . . . Not so much.
Here's the start of a compliment sandwich . . . I will note that The KC Free Press.com has a great calender that could seriously threaten The Pitch.
Other than that, it's pretty much useless.
TKC question:
ARE KANSAS CITY MIDDLE-CLASS WHITE PEOPLE SO COMPLETELY OBSESSED WITH THEMSELVES THAT THEY FORGET ABOUT ALL OF THE PEOPLE OF COLOR IN KANSAS CITY?!?!?!
Thankfully, the answer is no.
Even white people get tired or reading about white people all the time.
THEREFORE . . . I'm putting yet another group of Kansas City Internet d-bags on notice:
HIRE SOME MINORITY REPORTERS DAMN IT IF YOU'RE GOING TO CLAIM TO REPRESENT ALL OF KANSAS CITY!!!
To be fair, that's not what their doing . . . It's actually just another entertainment mag with the typical softball style that's not any different than what The Star is offering. There is only one exception to this otherwise lame crew of writers and to be honest I like reading this stuff on his blog but I understand it's nice to get paid.
Other than that . . . It's hard to believe that there are no minority people covering entertainment or that the ad dollars from people of color in business mean so little. Advertising really isn't my bag, but this seems like the same kind of racial and class based elitism that's making The Star irrelevant.
Finally, I've seen this one before and it never lasts . . . Slowly, these hipsters might catch on that they're not gonna get rich or even well paid writing this tripe and that's when the in-fighting starts. Right now I just want to put them off their game while their still hopeful . . . But in the long term and to finish my "compliment sandwich," the only benefit to this run-of-the-mill Internet offering is that there just might be a few more chubby white women mistakenly referring to themselves as writers that I can maybe encourage to bang me with the (empty) promise of a gig. Don't laugh, if these people weren't desperate they wouldn't be working for a relatively unheard of online outfit.

nice.
ReplyDeleteSeriously, dude: who needs to hire ANY reporter to discover what's making the news re: minorities?
ReplyDeleteThe Star already does an excellent job of daily crime reporting.
yep. this site is bullshit.
ReplyDeleteyep. this site is bullshit.
ReplyDeleteKill Whitey!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't be worried Tony but i also wouldn't want to be such a spoil sport.
ReplyDeleteTony, why does it matter what race they are? Does not Barack Obama represent all of America, even whites?
ReplyDeleteTony - please look again. Contributor "Dave" is black AND white.
ReplyDeleteTony - please look again. Contributor "Dave" is black AND white.
ReplyDeleteLook around Tony. The VAST majority of people are WHITE. As a percentage there are around 80% of us white people. YOUR the Minority, remember? You want the rest of us to pretend differantly but reality bites huh?
ReplyDeletethreatened much, Tony?
ReplyDeleteAs has already been noted, at least their site isn't both racist AND sexist.
The biggest complaint I have about it is that, in the all-important first 24 hours, it hasn't changed much and, ahem, is already looking dull.
ReplyDeleteThat'll kill it more than anything.
Mo Rage
it is likely a side-project of publisher's ad/design firm … meaning, they are using the people who already worked there, which could explain the demographics
ReplyDeleteps, not all news/internet-based news has to be daily … sure, it brings tons more readers, but human efforts have limits
lame. I fucking hate to agree with Tony but their shit is worse than Ink.
ReplyDeleteTwo important points on these comments
ReplyDeleteWhy is it okay for an ad/design firm to be all white?
And KC is not 80% white. Not even in Brookside. Somebody has been hanging around in Johnson County too long.

ReplyDelete...why is it okay for an ad/design firm to be all white?
uh...because this is (still) America?
discrimination is un-American
ReplyDeleteThey should be the best qualified REGARDLESS of race. Why do minorities always scream foul without even knowing what the selection process was????
ReplyDeleteI'm not taking sides because there are no "facts" to base an opinion on in this matter!
It really is best to weigh in on things immediately after they're formed. Especially ongoing project that evolve over time.
ReplyDeleteI remember when the iPod first came out in 2001 and someone showed it to me - what a piece of shit. I'm so glad I deemed it a failure that first day and ignored it from there on out. What ever happened to that product anyway? Probably went the way of New Coke. Ha ha, what idiots they have over there at Apple.
My uncle from North Carolina knew this kid in high school named Michael Jordan who was very mediocre at basketball and didn't even make the team his sophomore year. He was a real nobody. Luckily my uncle was there to shit all over him after playing one-on-one with him for twenty minutes because he knew that was an appropriate amount of time to assess an individual's potential. I think he works at McDonald's now or something. Poor fella.
I also remember this awful pilot that debuted 20 years ago called The Seinfeld Chronicles. Wow, what a not-very-good show that hadn't quite mastered its own voice yet! I hope that thing was canceled immediately after because there was not a chance in hell it could've developed and evolved over time. The people who created that show are probably homeless right now.
The lesson to take from all of this: it's really easy to create something from scratch, take a risk and assemble people you trust to help you try and put out something of quality. The hard work is taking the 2 minutes from your day and pissing all over it on your blog or better yet, through anonymous comments on that blog!

putting together a private, all white ad/design firm isn't, ispo facto, discrimination.
good job race baiting again Tony
ReplyDeleteFunny how no one here seems to see whats really going on.
ReplyDeleteTony loves bloggers and links to them all the time.
But he's only ok with individuals doing stuff as long as he gets to be the one who presents it and gets to weigh in on it first. Local blogs and news have to come through his filter so everyone can know what to think about it or else its racist.
Hmmmmmmm.....I think somebody feels threatened
What happened to State of the Line?
ReplyDeleteand I thought INK was worthless! None of their content is relevant and it looks like they are just taking events out of The Pitch and pitch.com. I'm not concerned with the race factor, but I am concerned with plaigarism
ReplyDeleteyeah, anon 5:32, I'm sure the pitch has exclusive rights over what's happening in the concerts. they are the only ones on the band mailing lists or who are allowed to print event information available on websites all over town.
ReplyDeletemoron.
Looks like The Pitch and Ink are arguing on Tony's blog.
ReplyDeleteGotta love it.
Tony:
ReplyDeleteDo you see any issue at all outside the lens of race? I'll bet the editors at KCFreePress.com would be happy to get offers from contributing writers who can prove they've got the chops and are minorities.
Tony would be happy to write for the Free Press. Provided he gets paid, of course. Problem is, it'd take some things he doesn't have ... like objectivity. And tact.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for those people who think discrimination is/was un-American: What the hell do you think the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments were written for? Window dressing?
well, thank god they've got "McKay" to do media criticism, I guess all the retarded school kids are working at Goodwill.
ReplyDeleteTony will white bash as fast as he can..........even for the wrong reason.
ReplyDeleteAt least the Pitch has a restaurant review so that Tony can send his mother for take out.
Douche
ReplyDeletegood question about State of the Line.
ReplyDeleteApparently, once Ms. McKay started writing/working for KCFreepress, it died.
Both seem sad. slow developments. You have to keep things fresh. I think so, anyway.
And I'm decidedly not 20 years old, too.
Mo Rage
Sour grapes!
ReplyDeletePOFLW: How is it dead if he's been posting multiple stories everyday? By that logic your own blog, with quite a few less updates over the last week, is deader n shit
ReplyDeletea bit of patience. i looked back today at the new site and there are already some new thing s popping up. curious to see what else they do. i'm pretty sceptical of new media ventures in kansas city (or anywhere else)but this one at least looks good and has some interesting stories.
I think Tony is jealous! He wanted to be the token brown person over there.
ReplyDeleteI hope they do well.
Ha! looks like a bunch of crackers!
ReplyDelete"They're" not "their."
ReplyDeleteWow Tony, aren't you so tough, beating on a fledgling enterprise? Sorry they didn't hire you. They must've somehow picked up on the fact that you specialize in cowardly low-blows.
ReplyDelete
