Recently, I was lucky enough to have a nice chat with former City Council Lady Becky Nace who has been dominating the Northland political chatter as of late.
Put simply . . .
EVERYBODY IS WONDERING WHAT SHE'S GONNA DO!!!
She was cool enough to return a call of mine and promised to answer questions with "no bullshit." Off the bat, I kinda liked her style with that opening line. And from what I remember she was a pretty good Council person . . . I even remember a 2003 report of hers that predicted the P&L District, Downtown Renaissance would not be sustainable with financial turmoil on the horizon.
Anyhoo . . . Starting out I wanted her to confirm or deny rumors claiming she was soon to join the LONG list of people running for Mayor: She quickly ruled it out and noted increased family and career obligations.
However . . .
NACE SIMPLY DOESN'T KNOW IF SHE WILL RUN FOR COUNCIL!!!
In her District, Council People Hermann and Skaggs both term out. So the race is wide open. It's a matter of Kansas City politico fact that just about everybody North of the River is encouraging her to run. She says she's giving it some serious consideration and she's one of the few people in this town who thinks it's too far away from the next election cycle to start making plans.
To wit . . . Nace is so nice she seems to still support Mayor Funky. "I just don't think he has had a chance to move past the political stuff and on to the financial side where he knows what he's doing," Nace said. "I still think there's a chance for him (Funkhouser) to accomplish something." Her comment was an interesting look into the psyche of the Northland, which still seems optimistic and a bit out of touch with the sentiments of the rest of the City.
On her previous Mayor Campaign . . . Everyone realizes that she was the target of some serious antipathy from so many Mayoral contenders and it's common knowledge the she took a hit from her association with GOP Machiavelli Jeff Roe. But she still stands behind the guy's skill, "More than any other operation I've seen, Jeff knows what he's doing and was a consummate professional." On her detractors: "We took the blame for a lot of dirty tricks in that race that were the doing of other candidates. But in the end, I'm happy with that part of my life and what I accomplished in service to the city."
So . . . While Nace continues to be the subject of local polticial chatter she only seems to be comfortable with offering aB RESOUNDING "MAYBE" as to her political ambitions while the rest of Kansas City keeps guessing her next move.
Who cares about the North?
ReplyDeleteBecky will be Mayor not this next time but time after next. It's setting up beautifully even if she doesn't rejoin the Council.

2. What does she specically bring to the table now?
3. What's her plan?
