TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL PERMANENT LOCKDOWN BRINGS A CALL FOR SUPERINTENDENT COVINGTON TO FINALLY DEAL WITH KCMSD PATRONAGE!!!
The permanent lockdown at Central High School and the hot mess that recently went down with this most recent Kansas City, Missouri School District embarrassment is bringing a renewed interest in an ongoing point of contention over perceived political patronage.
Let's make it plain.
The principal of Central is Deborah McGill. Ms. McGill is the daughter of former School Board President and current School Board Member Helen Ragsdale.
By most accounts, yesterday Ms. McGill was completely incompetent and failed to recognize that earlier outbursts during the day at her school would OBVIOUSLY spill out into the street and escalate. People close to the incident note that she wasn't in control, she seemingly had no idea what was going on and her performance as a High School Principal has routinely come into question.
In fact, a great many AWESOME TKC TIPSTERS have noted throughout the years that her job at Central is straight up political patronage.
To wit . . .
IF SUPERINTENDENT COVINGTON IS SERIOUS ABOUT IMPROVING KANSAS CITY SCHOOLS HE CAN START BY FIRING MCGILL AND PUTTING TO REST ONE OF THE MANY INSTANCES OF ALLEGED PATRONAGE!!!
Until Covington takes on the real power structure that has wrecked Kansas City Schools then all of his maneuvers are nothing more than hype. The shooting and violence in and around Central High School should be lamented but it also presents a unique opportunity for Covington to make real change rather than just continue the empty pleasantries that have comprised most talk about the KCMSD so far.

ReplyDeleteFiring a relative of Helen (On the) Ragsdale? I am soooooo there! Ragsdale was the embodiment of the old system of patronage and putting employment for one's family and friends (regardless how incompetent) over educating kids.
ReplyDeleteWill Covington have the balls to follow through and kick this Ragsdale spawn to the curb? I'm guessing no. Ragsdale still has enough supporters of the status quo on the board and enough people who feel they owe their jobs to her that when it comes time to find district employees willing to testify against McGill suddenly no one remembers a thing.
Okay, Tony--great entry today. Important topic. Hard-hitting. Controversial and likely on the mark when it comes to Ms. Ragsdale.

Tony, check on why KCMSD schools use security guards instead of police department school resource officers. It can't be because KCMO doesn't do this since they have SROs from KCPD in Hickman and Ruskin and I believe Center. All Johnson County high schools and middle schools have them. I think it is because the security in the KCMSD is privately contracted and I bet that contract is tied to patronage. I also know that several years ago I was at Central for an event and one of the guards was a man I know had a drug conviction and had served time in prison.

ReplyDeleteYou make some very good points. Covington is talking a good talk. At last public report, the principal at Central was NOT certified. Yet, JC wants to cut certified staff in the name of "accountability". Something seriously wrong with that picture.
