TKC EXCLUSIVE!!! MORE COMPLAINTS OF BIAS AT THE P&L DISTRICT!!! MOSAIC DENIES ENTRY AND ALLEGEDLY DOESN'T CARE ABOUT DISCRIMINATION!!!
Yet another recent story of discrimination and bias is hitting the P&L District. This time the details of a seemingly racist incident are well documented and seem exceptionally disturbing because they involve professional people in the metro and not the so-called hip-hop baggy clothes wearing gangsta rap fans that so many racists love to castigate.
I was surprised to see some familiar names on a list of folks who filed this complaint and a couple of people I believe are related to KC School Board Member Helen Ragsdale. Check it:
Here's a glimpse at the details of the incident from the folks filing a compliant:
"At or around 12:30 AM the Parties approached the doorman at Mosaic and waited patiently to gain entry. After 15 minutes of observing other patrons enter the establishment, the Parties realized they were being completely ignored."There was some debate about a member of the party wearing short shirtsleeves to which the complainants noted that the attire . . .
"was in accordance with the exact same standard of dress as other patrons. The parties witnessed a multitude of patrons enter KC Live! and subsequently Mosaic Nightclub and Lounge dressed dressed identical(ly). The parties understood from the KC Live's website that short sleeved shirts worn by men is permissible. An interesting fact is that the doorman who denied access donned a short sleeved shirt."The group advised the member of the party in question to tuck in his shirt and another one of his friends gave him a jacket to cover the short shirtsleeves. They pleaded their case to the doorman once again.
"The doorman emphatically responded, "No one is going to get in." The Parties stood and waited an additional 10 minutes for observational purposes and were surprisingly addressed by the addressed by the doorman. The doorman said, "You guys don't need to waste your time because I'm not going to let you in." He further stated, "I don't care if you think it's discrimination, I'm not letting you in." Another interesting fact considering that no one had claimed discrimination at that moment or anytime prior thereto."The letter goes on from there and ends rather cryptically.
"Please do not ignore this complaint. After reading about several complaints involving similar discriminatory actions in KC Live! we are adamant that this type of ongoing behavior must cease. This public/private funded district must not continue to ignore these issues any further. We will not allow you to continue to see us as an invisible class. I repeat: We Will Not Continue To Be Ignored.I've highlighted the more interesting parts but feel free to check out the whole document that's floating around the net for yourself.
This event and others similar in nature must be addressed. This type of bias and abuse of power is completely unacceptable.
THE IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER HERE IS THAT DRESS CODES USED TO JUSTIFY DISCRIMINATION APPARENTLY STILL DOMINATE THE P&L DISTRICT!!!
Kansas City hasn't moved past this problem and it will continue to plague this town as long as local elected officials continue to do nothing.
To that end, it was nice to see that the letter was e-mailed to just about every elected official in the entire metro area. And Jason Whitlock . . . Just in case he decided to weigh in with another missive referencing his sense of fashion and problems that are still very much a part of the P&L District.

ReplyDeleteIn this case, I don't think it's racism. Some people wait in line indefinitely, others get in right away, the difference being "status". It's KC's lame attempt at an LA/Miami/London type club where you've got to be "somebody" to get in. Of course, in those cities the clubs have more demand than they can handle, so the exclusivity makes more sense. For the pretentious douchebag crowd that I usually see outside, the exclusivity is part of the appeal.

If you take a look at the hundreds of millions of dollars that have been spent on malls and shopping centers over the years only to have them run down and ruined by the ghetto elements of KC then you might understand why P&L tries so hard to keep undesirables out. BUT, there is a mixed crowd at Mosaic. There are people who will stand outside of the line to try and get in based on status, and there are people who will wait in the line to get in.
Not sure what the doormans problem was that night, but the people did get through the KC Live! security into P&L. Sigh.....
