Kansas City School Board School

Airick L. West and a bunch of other people spent their Saturday trying to educate, inform and promote new Kansas City Missouri School Board Candidates, TKC stopped by . . . Somewhat intrigued.

  3. Another amateur black playuh trying to use a few intelligent words but i'm not impressed.

So long as KCSD VOTERS fall for these pretenders, there'll be no leadership to pull that urban distict out of its ass.

Sorry, the guy's not a scholar, doesn't know first thing about education and shoudl probably be an assistant manager of a restaurant for a few eyars.

Being on a directing board for one of KC's largest corporations is absurd! We need a Condaleeza Rice who actually did her HOMEWORK, not another Alonzo talkin-outta-his- ass playuh prtending to be a community leader.

Barack Obama, he ain't, even if he's the right color to get some votes. he doesn't even talk the talk very well.

Lookin for leadership, Tony? Keep lookin, he ain't it! It was obvious you had second thoughts. Trust your gut. Ur right about that one. Just another jive talker.

So many educated black people and we disrespect their race so much as to give dirtclods like that one airtime! What an insult. You insult their race by giving anyone black airtime.

Like that's the best they can do. Ignore idiots of any color. Think of him like Gloria Squitero. Not worthy of public attention.

The problem with school board elections is that they always bring out the amateurs. That their black isn't worthy of your attention and if you think it is, then you really ARE a racist.

Hold back until the smart ones come out! Don't just settle for dark. Settle for smart! that one's not yet ready for prime time. Probably never will be. It's fairly clear he didn't study.

  5. Interestingly enough, Radioman, I don't entirely disagree with your assessment: I'm not trained in education and I've never claimed to be a scholar (though I *am* quite proud to serve the scholars that attend our district). When interviewed during the School Board School, I echo some of your sentiments:
    http://www.nbcactionnews.com/news/local/story/Dozens-Learn-How-to-Run-for-the-School-Board/2BS4bEl9QU2KnK8_xrJVuQ.cspx

    The key quote:
"If there are nine perfect school board members in this city, I'm not one of those nine. My commitment on behalf of our scholars is in finding the people who are," West explained.

Which brings us to an important conversation: on behalf of our scholars I'm willing to step aside to create space for a better school board member which for me, considering how much I love being a school board member, will be a real sacrifice. What sacrifice are you willing to make for our scholars? Our talk alone will not transform this district; action will be required.

If you ever want to sit down to discuss what action we can take together to transform this district -- up to and including "dirtclod", "playuh" removal -- please don't hesitate to email me.

  6. I wish I could have been there, but my busy schedule is only becomming increasingly busier, and I'm already getting in trouble for the amount of time I spend with my family.

I appreciate everything Airick is doing to transform the district and help the students achieve... I'll continue to support Be1 when I can.

It's amazing how wrong Radioman is about everything. I don't think I could post blogs that poorly if I tried.

Airick, I'm sure you meant well, but please don't encourage radioman at this forum. He a washed up, never was, nobody, attention seeking blog whore who spouts his opinions about EVERYTHING but is knowledgeable about NOTHING. I've been told he is a JoCo resident, so is of no use whatsoever in assisting you in your efforts.
I'm sure he would love a vistor over at his crappy site, but trust me, you won't be there long.
    Good luck with your endeavor.

    Radioman, go play in traffic.

  10. First people whine about all the wrong things in public education.

The teacher unions are usually bent on keeping the status quo. They'd choke before allowing merit pay to teachers who do things better.

Administrators are former teachers, not managers, not innovators and I think that's a main reason why education hasn't done much innovating since I've been around. There were open classrooms, closed classrooms again, but the basic structure of cramming 25 kids in a room, talk to them for 45 minutes and sending them to another teacher to rinse and repeat... that hasn't changed.

And young people are no more well suited to learning in that environment than they were when I was young.

Its too bad all of education didn't realize that each child should have his own IEP, that every child needs a special education suited to his/her learning style. Why tailor education only to the (so called) handicapped? Spend the huge amount of money you have differently.

Sadly so many kids still drop out and tune out and these are the very ones who don't thrive sitting in little rows getting their educations as devised by the textbook companies. Teaching the book is what teachers have been doing for decades. Publishing companies run education in America. Always been that way!

There never seem to be enough alternative schools.

Perhaps MOST schools should be like alternative ones...with better teaching methods, always themed on career pathing... to do everything one can do to motivate daily.

We know a lot about motivation today but the problem with schools is that teachers aren't exposed to much of it. Schooling is still very traditional and it really doesn't work so well, now does it?

Not when we have to keep dumbing down our requirements. We seem to do fine until the middle school years and then we start losing them. especially the boys. As much money as we give to education, they should have fixed this a long time ago.

Thirty years ago, A Nation at Risk came out that supposedly was going to set education on its ear. It didn't. For education is like a huge ship...it doesn't turn easily...and fact is, the Captain doesn't really want to go in a new direction anyway. He just wants yet another uneventful school year. Innovation is way too risky and its safer to just keep on keepin on.

And so the KCSD gets a new Captain each year, all the same as the ones before. It's because they all have the same background. How predictable is that?

The other thing I'd suggest is that schools won't get anywhere with the kids if they don't get somewhere with the parents. Whoever said public education should stop at age 17?

They're set up to teach. They have the facilities. Parents should be going to classes after dinner. And on the internet. Education hasn't even STARTED to use the internet for its potential! What a terrific delivery system and now bandwidth fast enough to to send videos. So where are the videos?

Schools have cable channels already given to them. In the early days when computers came out, classrooms all had ONE Apple IIe sitting in a box in the teachers closet. They got the computers for next to nothing from Apple but no one taught the teachers what to do with it. Besides, what can you do with one clunky Apple IIe?

Now things are better. The feds should quit spending money on bureaucrats printing reports and offer those six figure salaries instead for production money to groups creating video curricula and giving them free to school districts nationwide...

some for kids, some for adults. some remedial. Some on parenting. One on how shaking a baby kills that baby. One on how to write a resume. Some on using checkbooks. On and on and on.

But of course make sure Barack Obama's not pictured in any of them or the Republicans will have a shit fit.

I'm done now. If Sniper doesn't snipe, feel free to discuss anything that comes to mind.

  12. Thank you Airick for all you do!

  13. Thanks for writing me a private note, bud. I wrote all that, not to show off, but to suggest that if I said anything in there you didn't already know (other than the AppleIIe story you are too young to know about), then maybe you aren't suited to be a school board member.

it all sounds good. Find 9 community members to decide policy for your town's schools. ordinary folks. let them hire a professional superintendent, set policy as to what parents want for their children, and let the professionals take that policy and deliver it. to micro-manage.

And evrybody thinks he's an educational expert. After all, I went to school for 12 years, I know a thing or two about how to teach kids.

Well, maybe not. KCMO is a city of a half million people. Surely tehre are 9 adults who know a alot about teaching, and running the city's largest corporation, and whose dedication to the children is bigger than their own egos.

Yet thats' hard to find. because school board members get elected with yard signs and going to neighborhood coffees to glad hand. Those are not the same skills required to set policies for huge corporations.

I don't think you have what it takes. No one suggests you be PERFECT. but parents have a right to insist all members of the board be QUALIFIED. And being a resident of the district with heart and a familiar name just isn't enough.

It's one of the reasons why the KCSD has never amounted to anything. They can't get enough quality people to RUN...and to WIN!

I know a lot about school boards. I covered them as a reporter for years. Not like today's television where you grab a fast soundbite, race to the station and put it on the air. No one covers a city like that anymore. I loved it so, but broadcasting quit doing it because it was too expensive. And they NEVER did it in THIS market simply because there are too many school districts to attract enough viewers two watch. And what do I think is a good school board member? Dan Glickman was one. He ended up being a US rep from Kansas, then Clinton's Secretary of Agriculture and now he's running the Hollywood Motion Picture Assocaition. Smart guy from the get go. I knwo another who ended up as a prestigious US senator. These are people who had VISION, common sense and also the ability to get elected.

I'm suggesting school board in a city as troubled as KC is, is not a place to get a political start. They need expertise. And they need it now.

That said, let me suggest that if you're looking for guidance on how to fix education on a Sunday in a comment room of a blog as dumpy as this one...well, you're not one of the nine KCSD needs.

sorry. And I'm not running either.

  16. 7:46, I mean Radioman, everyone knows you got put in your place. But do you know it?

  17. Yes, I do. He's impressed me since. But YOU have no idea because the real story hasn't been posted in here. You probably should butt out.

Actually, I bet you probably should butt out of A LOT of conversations you butt into.

Contrary to popular opinion, your monthly payment to your ISP doesn't give you as much license as you might think. But mostly, it doesn't give you wisdom. Only access. You can still be as stupid as you ordinarily are and have no more influence on the planet than you ordinarily do.

  20. Thanks to Radioman, I'm breaking my guideline of never commenting on the same blog post twice -- no matter how badly I'd like to. I'm doing so because Radioman made a request that, despite my personal preference, I understand and respect the intention enough to accept. His request was to take a private conversation public.

His private responses demonstrate two things: 1) he knows this issue better than I stopped to realize and 2) **gritting teeth** he and I are on the same page on a number of education-critical issues.

If you care to read the exchange, it's posted in its entirety at www.kcu4ea.org/radioman/ (it wouldn't fit in comments here) and contains of good deal of substantive dialogue on the issues. The summary: Radioman, thank you for sharing your gifts on behalf of our scholars. How will you share your gifts next?

  21. Wow. Radioman has Airick spamming Tony's blog as well.

    Unbelievable.

I read the conversation. Airick is much more intelligent than Radio Spammer but I think he's spinning his wheels with his answer to radio guy just like he is in so many other instances.
