Iran away from Mary Sanchez

Here's a little known fact about Kansas City's Latino Community:

Back in the day, before the Civil Rights Era, a great many Latinos pretended to be Persian or Lebanese in order to be more accepted and escape discrimination. Apparently, Middle-Eastern identity was far more exotic than regular old Mexican-American ancestry and provided better social status.

I mention this fact in light of a recent column by Mary Sanchez on the subject of unrest in Iran that's just as convoluted as bygone conceptions about ethnicity in the United States. A quick reading of the meandering and misguided opus by Ms. Sanchez won't reveal even the slightest bit of logic into the situation, only the author's cursory understanding of yet another culture based solely on what she has witnessed on cable news like the rest of us.

It must be a proud day for Ms. Sanchez, she has managed to demonstrate absolutely no insight into two distinct cultures. Her lack of anything meaningful to offer on the topic of Iran is understandable because most people are too frightened to admit that nothing will come of so much death and destruction that is the direct result of a not-so-long-ago revolution that installed theocratic rule. Sadly, while Sanchez is tap dancing and offering the standard milquetoast elitist view about a nation thousands of miles away . . . People who (theoretically) share her same background don't even merit the platitudes of her cable-tv-styled punditry. Maybe it's for the best. A business suit wearing Latina casting down opinions from on high might not be what the Latino in community in Kansas City needs. In fact, it's probably best she kept her confounding opinions focused on her TV watching habits.

  1. how come civil unrest in African countries never gets this level of coverage or protest? that is some racist shit. maybe DJ Jazzy Jeff from the above story could latch onto something like that if he actually cares about racism.

  2. You are correct. What can a Star columnist possibly know about Iran or the middle east in general? They can only repeat what they read or watch on TV. They chose a side which matches their overall political philosophy and repeat it in a column. A complete waste of space.

  4. Comrade Sanchez was over the top on this column. I was shocked to read that she'd support President Obama's position on this issue. (obvious saracasm)
