P&L DISTRICT DRESS CODE CONTROVERSY CONTINUES!!! KANSAS CITY PROTEST AGAINST CORDISH DISCRIMINATION WILL COINCIDE WITH NCAA TOURNAMENT!!!
Councilman Terry Riley's mishandling of the P&L Dress code issue made things worse and it seems that angst in the urban core over alleged Cordish discrimination continues unabated.
To wit, I should have posted this notice of a P&L Protest yesterday but I'm not surprised that local media is trying to bury the story that threatens to embarrass Kansas City on the national stage.
Check it:
PEACEFUL PROTEST & PRESS CONFERENCE AT THE POWER & LIGHT DISTRICTAnd while some folks are tempted to overlook this dress code controversy - the issue was really driven home to me watching some video The Pitch recorded but didn't post showing the discriminatory dress code in action:
The time is now to rebuild our communities and reclaim our country from corporate welfare kings! The Cordish Company is a billion-dollar empire infamous for using threats, intimidation and bully tactics to control city government. Cordish adopts divisive and discriminatory dress codes in their entertainment districts in major cities throughout the country while draining taxpayers in the process. The city has to divert $4 million from the cash-strapped general fund to make the bond payments for the underperforming Power & Light District. That means more cuts in basic services. The debt is expected to increase next year. There has been heated debate at public hearings and extensive media coverage about Cordish's controversial dress code and the negative impact it has on the city’s economy and race relations. If you or someone you know has ever experienced or witnessed discrimination at the Power & Light District, please come share your story. If you want to speak out against racism and discrimination, please come share your statements. We will hold a press conference and protest on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 2:00pm on the sidewalk of the Sprint Center right before the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) will also be available to take your written complaints. Please contact Yancy Davis by phone at 816-678-8725 or by email at ydavis@isiorganization.org for more information
I see Jason Harper sipping on a fruity ass drink in the background but I don't know much else about the video . . . It could be staged for all I know . . . But at face value what it depicts is obvious - A black dude, not causing trouble, minding his own business is singled out of the crowd, surrounded and taken away simply because of a t-shirt.
And in the final analysis . . . Anyone still supporting this insane and discriminatory dress code policy and the stubbornness of Cordish on this matter isn't doing so because of logic or business concerns or any other reason than to make it harder to people of color support a business that's losing millions but still strives to keep away minorities.
But a black dude was kicking him out so it's okay.
ReplyDeleteOnce again race baiting and a continued disregard for commercial strategy. The P&L is not a public park, it's a business endeavor that is entitiled to set its own standards for the greater good of those who want to venture there AND SPEND $. IT IS NOT A PUBLIC PARK OR THE 18TH and VINE FAILURE.
ReplyDelete"continued disregard for commercial strategy"
ReplyDeleteWhat are you talking about?
The place is $4 million in debt just this year.
Whatever they're doing isn't working.
And you're ok putting it into a $24M deficit?
ReplyDeleteblacks just don't like niggers!
ReplyDeleteWhat does Beth think about the dress code?
ReplyDeleteDude this dress code thing is killing your cred. Dress codes are not discrimination. This video is obvious spin since there is no reference to what even prompted this action. Find a new crusade.
ReplyDeleteTo whom are you referring? Beth needs to find a new crusade? Or Tony does?
ReplyDeleteWhy can't it be both?
ReplyDeleteHow about some Eastside leadership standing up against the thug culture that is at the heart of this whole mess?
ReplyDeleteWhy isn't anyone talking about the young black punks who like to bash you in the shoulder when they are walking in groups while they grab and yell at the girls you are with?
Why doesn't any one talk about the black girls who act like overgrown children throwing tantrums and fighting like five year olds for the entertainment of the boys around them?
Why doesn't anyone talk about the young black criminals that walk out on bar tabs or try to put them on stolen debit cards and then act like it is a major racial incident when they are confronted?
Why? Why? Why? I don't know why either but until there is some black leadership that instills civility and values they are going to continue to deal with bullshit like the dress code. If only the likes of Author Benson and Clinton Adams could make money cleaning up their community instead of profiting from defending its worst attributes.
Hey Tony. Thanks for the link. I had a post scheduled for this morning -- it's live now on the Plog. And no, the video wasn't staged.
ReplyDeleteLame attempt by The Pitch and Tony to keep this controversy going.
ReplyDeleteThey kicked him out because he wasn't wearing any green. Anonymous 6:54, it was built with public money and you're an idiot for sticking up for Cordish. They deserve no sympathy.
ReplyDeleteI can't believe the idiocy of comments like 8:10.
ReplyDeleteI wish the protesters good luck and I hope people avoid the P&L District during the tournament and go to other more worthwhile Downtown establishments.
You can't believe the idiocy because you obviously can't see the truth of 8:10's statement. Quit worrying about race baiting and concentrate on behavior FOOL!
ReplyDeleteWas he sipping on the same beer for 4 hours and not tipping?
ReplyDeleteWhat a joke. We wouldn't even have the basketball tourney or anyone downtown if it weren't for the p&l.
ReplyDelete8:36 - What behavior. The guy was wearing a T-Shirt and when asked to leave he went politely.
ReplyDeleteI hope the P&L goes bankrupt.
Tell that negro to wear his Obama t-shirt next time. better yet, just call obama.
ReplyDeleteThat wasn't even a T-shirt. It was a white casual v-neck shirt. It didn't look like it was even make of cotton. I wonder if there was something else going on as well. It would have been nice if someone would have even interviewed the guy and at least tried to get a resonpse from security or management. That is the diffence between a blogger and a journalist.
ReplyDelete8:48 "We wouldn't even have the basketball tourney or anyone downtown if it weren't for the p&l."
ReplyDeleteYou really don't know much about Kansas City do you?
We have had the NCAA here many times without The P&L District.
They are not doing us any favors we are the ones who are helping Cordish.
9:21 the video was taken by "journalists" at The Pitch. Not bloggers.
ReplyDeleteKansas City is just a nigger town. Get use to it...that's why we white people moved south and even further south to get away from niggers. We can accept blacks but niggers are just niggers. They bring NOTHING to a community but trouble.
ReplyDeleteI saw this incident that you posted from the video. What you don't see is the "dress code hosts" telling him that he doesn't meet dress code policy before the security talks to him. The guy got disorderly with the host and refused to leave, which is why security showed up. Just like every other media outlet, the pitch fails to show the whole story. Suprise Suprise
ReplyDeleteAnon 10:49, you work for Cordish? I was next to the guy when this happened. I'm in the video. He didn't get disorderly. The guys working the gate let him in without saying shit about his shirt. When he got swarmed with the four security guards he left without putting up a fight. You're full of shit.
ReplyDeleteWell Anon, one of the dress code hosts talked to this guy and then called security. if you were there then you saw the crowd (15,000 people), do you blame the security for having enough officers there just in case something happens. It was hard enough for me to get through the crowd to get a beer, but i understand going in numbers if an officer would need help. regardless, this video doesnt show the dress code guy telling him "after he got in" that he needed to leave. I don't work for cordish but was outside of Angel's Rock Bar when this happened.
ReplyDeleteDude's clothing was snappier than the (non-black) douches with the green T-shirts who were unmolested.
ReplyDeletedo I break dress code if I have a rocket in my pocket?
ReplyDeleteno but the signs say concealed weapons are prohibited haha
ReplyDeleteCan we do something about the trashy hoochie mamas who have their junk on display?
ReplyDeleteThat shit is just plain nasty.
I am all for a dress code if these folks are eliminated.
Baggy clothing, backpacks and oversized purses can conceal weapons, right? I don't see anything wrong with stopping a 150lb dude wearing a 2x dress for a shirt and a denim tent as jeans if someone suspects theres a weapon in there. If he happens to be a race other than white, that's unfortunate.
I just want to be a safe drunk, mmkay?
Shut it, fatty.
ReplyDeleteWhy are you protesting at Sprint Center? They don't have a dress code. Last I checked, they aren't part of P&L.
ReplyDeleteStand your ground Cordish.
ReplyDeleteWherever "hip-hop" clothing and people flock, so goes loud mouth trash talk, fights, graffiti, and a wide range of various anti-social behaviors. After all, that is the main is the main theme of hip-hop ... a counter-culture statement against mainstream culture. It encompasses the loud sounds, loud music, loud talk/slang, rhythms, clothing, jewelry and tribal attire, and social customs not observed in mainstream culture.
Just because corporate america has learned to sell and market to the hip hop culture doesn't elevate it from the mud.
Bring back the draft. These kids need a decent cause. Oh the indignation!
ReplyDeleteOtherwise these loft living yuppies need to get laid. Jeez, the crap people will support to get attention!
While I would like to know more details about what exactly happened in this particular situation, I still find this to be absurd.
ReplyDeleteI can understand having some sort of dress codes for certain enviornments, i.e. if at a country club or fancy resturant, having a tie, or suit jacket. But this was clearly just a plain old bar.
His shirt was fine, he was not causing any problems whatsoever. Since when does what you wear have an influence on how you act? If a bunch of black people came dressed in suits and dress shoes and fought, would that been be prohibited in the bar as well?
Furthermore, when white people cause problems, or get into fights in a bar, why arent brands such as AE or Abercrombie or Hollister banned? If what you wear is such a determinant on your behavior, then one would think that bars would ban all the brands that people wear that get in fights.
If one were to count how many fights occurred in bars between people wearing loose fitting jeans or a necklace and people wearing Affliction or Hollister shirts, they would see that the number is probably fairly even. Base who gets into your bar on their actions, not their style choice.
If these comments are any indication of race relations in Kansas City, I want no part of that place. I feel sad for KC but happy from STL because that will be where ALL the national entertainment options go for now on!
ReplyDeleteGive me a break. You see more wannabe M&M white boys than black people wearing baggy clothes. This dress code has nothing to do with discrimination, it's just another reason for the left to whine about something. There is a black person in the White House, affirmative action has made the playing field slanted for minorities and the Republican party is in the crapper. What is there to whine about now? Oh let's see, a dress code that is designed to give the downtown area a better image. Believe me, there are more tank top wearing, mullet headed, vulgar, muffin top, ass falling out of their cutoff Lee jeans WHITE trailer trash morons in and around KC that this dress code would apply to than there are night gown wearing t-shirt black kids.
ReplyDelete"I feel sad for KC but happy from STL because that will be where ALL the national entertainment options go for now on!" What are you even talking about Anon 3:51??? You are sad for one town but happy to be from another? Uhhh, ok, I am sad for you because you have horrible grammatical skills, and happy for myself because I know how to make comparisons that make sense. I hope all the national entertainment goes to,, ummm, the rest of the nation. You want all national entertainment to go to St. Louis? LOL. St. Louis will be the Mecca of entertainment! Awesome. By the way, WTF is national entertainment? Next time you post please make sense.
Im white and I wasnt allowed in because my shorts were too low on my waist? So clearly its not a color issue, but it is still disriminatory. If your defending this billion dollar corporation your probably brainwashed, or a cordish employee. A. They need to realize they are killing their business b/c of their ridiculous dress code and their bouncers.
ReplyDeleteB. Everythings overpriced
C. This is not what KC is about so why are our tax dollars going into this hole of a business venture?
D. Time to shut them down. No more taxes for a failing disriminatory business complexes in the heart of Kansas City. Reopen the district for all the classes. KCP&l SUCKS!
KCP&l Sucks. Down with the COrdish Corporate Thiefs.
ReplyDeleteIt saddens me to hear the ignorance and un-factual views of many on this post. But the worst part is these views represent a huge section of KC! Kansas City has always been and seems that it will always be a good ole boy, racist and segregated city. You blame it on cultures that are obviously different then your own. Well I advise you to research the truth about the discrimination, openly without any opinionate views (if possible for you). And you will find that this is an issue that has plagued the Kansas City Community for years. I ask you why can Chicago, Atlanta, New York, LA and almost every major city, can have an area that has successful bars and night clubs which cater to the hip-hop market. I agree with dress codes, but if you going to have one then make all abide by this code and not a select group of people. Kansas Citians are people with closed mindsets, judgmental and ignorant of other cultures and time and time again this is being exposed by issues like these. How is the city ever going to grow? Its funny because we talk about bring in conferences & conventions, corporate headquarter, professional sports teams and other attractions that increase tourist. Mayor Funkhouser addressed the cities population decline (that’s right more people have been moving out of KC than moving in for the past years.) This is one of the issues that have to be addressed if the city is ever going to really grow.
