KANSAS CITY LOOKS AT ESTABLISHING "ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS" THAT WILL DEVASTATE SMALLER BARS AND TAVERNS!!!
It looks like the economic climate will get worse for small business people in Kansas City running bars and taverns.
Already the smoking ordinance has created a lot of negative feedback and a very real decline in Kansas City bar business. P&L District subsidies have made it virtually impossible for so many bars and taverns to compete with the corporate fare backed by KC bonds. And the sad state of the economy has forced cowtown alcoholics to drink at home.
Sadly, the New Year looks even worse for folks running small time drinking establishments in this town. A KICKASS, VIDEO GAME MASTER AND SUPER WELL-INFORMED TKC TIPSTER (STAND UP!!!) REVEALS A RUMOR THAT:
REGULATED INDUSTRIES IS TRYING TO CREATE "ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICTS" THAT JUST MIGHT IMPEDE SMALLER BARS AND TAVERNS FROM RECEIVING 3AM LICENSES!!!
UPDATED (thank you TKC Commenters): Here's the link from The Star on this subject.
I've done a bit of calling around on this one and on the record everybody tells me the same garbage about how "this is just in the planning stages" and "it's one of many things being discussed" blah, blah, blah.
Off the record, this effort could be good news for places like Westport and drinkers who want to walk outside with their booze . . . But as usual, KC neighborhood establishments outside of these districts don't have a very high priority in the plan.
In other words, neighborhood hangouts are going to be hit hard once again, more small businesses are going to close and Kansas City continues to make it hard for anyone without a political lobby or corporate backing to make a buck in this town.
drink at home in your basement tony, simple solution.
ReplyDeleteThe Star had this a couple of months ago. So not so exclusive, Mr. TKC.
ReplyDeleteHere's the link the column from October:

Cool. Mike Hendricks reads TKC.
ReplyDeleteOld news. This has been discussed for years. It's all about NEW 3 AM licenses. All current 3 AM bars will be grandfathered in.
ReplyDeleteWaldo is a great example of what they're trying to do. Most of Waldo's bar have been granted 3 AM licenses (some very recently)...and they're mostly small, "neighborhood" places. And are concentrated within a block or two. It's easy to police. Really a pretty good idea.
if KC keeps going as it seems to maybe we can get a fresh layer of concrete again. Who has control of ready mix these days?
ReplyDeleteDoes that mean that holes like Zin will be gone. No that depends on Cauthern's tip Jar
ReplyDeleteWhat about oh so trendy Firefly, which found a way to get grandfathered into a 3 AM license.
ReplyDeleteYou can have Westport be open any hours you want. You can let booze walk out and around in "festival "fashion. But if Bill Nigro can't apply the Cordish approach to thuggery in there all this talk is BS. Thuggery is not racial its behavioral and it's the death of Westport (where the politics are flowing from on these issues)until it's resolved - which will probably never happen. Too many muggings shootings, etc. Sad deal but real.
ReplyDeleteKudos to 11:26. That's the most intelligent comment I've read on this blog all day.
