The Star: Gentrification is a good thing!!!

Mike "Douche-nozzle" Hendricks writes the swan song of Downtown's Pickwick Hotel and finds people who to tell him the Gentrification is a wonderful thing and they enjoy the lack of affordable housing anywhere near Downtown . . . Sadly, there's a couple of people who might actually believe this tripe and not see it for "paper-of-record" propaganda for the same "irrational exuberance" that has left Kansas City's economy in shambles.

  1. It all looks good from the platinum ghetto of JOCO

Seriously Tony, is anybody going to invest money in Kansas City with the crew now in charge? That is invest their own money, not the taxpayer's money which is handed over by the truckload with TIFs.

  2. Gentrification done with private money is usually positive. It is done at a slower pace giving everyone a chance to participate. When done with TIFs and other giveaways it creates a frenzy of real estate speculation that usually cannot be sustained.

The real problem with gentrification without solving the remainder of a cities problems it you simply push the poor out to trash some other decent neighborhood. But the Chamber folks have a ribbon cutting ceremony, the construction companies, architects, muni bond industry, developers all have business and the powers that be are happy.

  4. JOC everyman,
I am the most capitalist voter you will find but the gentrification efforts in Kansas City are about city subsidies for the politically connected and eminent domain abuse for those who aren't. These are all being pushed by so called businessmen. In reality they are better at selling schemes to gullible politicians than creating viable businesses.
