One of the most KICKASS TKC TIPSTERS recently sent a few photos my way documenting Kansas City's ongoing journey down the financial crapper.
Sutera's is/was a venerable Kansas City institution and its closing demonstrates not only that the local economy is much worse than anybody believes but also that this town doesn't care about the West Bottoms. Remember that the West Bottoms was something like the P&L District version 1.0 back in the day. Now it doesn't even register a blip on the radar of local politicos who threaten to close down Kemper in order to thwart any real competition with the ill-conceived Sprint Center.
Unlike other businesses shut down recently, it's hard to blame Sutera's for their lack of success. The food was excellent and the service was much better than any of the chain restaurants in the P&L District . . .
Nope, Sutera's is closed because Kansas City has put all of its proverbial eggs in the P&L District basket.
While local biz struggles to stay open with absolutely no help from local government, Chain restaurants and generic bars are destroying the competition thanks to the interest paid on KC bonds. To fund discriminatory dress codes and lame offerings, Kansas City is turning our back on the culture of this town. It's not a great choice and it is something the locals are already starting to regret.

ReplyDeleteThe economy is going to get so bad that we're going to have bigger problems that a few bars shuttering up for the long term.
ReplyDeleteThere's going to be a whole lot less popped collared knuckleheads standing around fingering their cell phones with one hand and themselves with the other here in the next few months.
My advice: learn to grow your own food or get friendly with those who do, arm yourselves, get to know your neighbors, and learn a valuable skill (not sipping coffee at your desk while managing your fantasy football team for three hours out of every workday.)
Lets not forget certain powers concerted effort to steer events away from Kemper Arena and the oddly long delay in finishing the ramp to and from the bottoms. Tony, what's up with that ramp?

ReplyDeleteThe 4730 Rainbow location is the second Sutera's Restaurant, which opened several years ago. They didn't move the original to that location.

ReplyDeleteWhy not drive to the other location on Rainbow and not shed tears for a restaurant that relied on visitors going to a dated arena that is now closed.

The place was dirty, dingy, disgusting and in need of basic repair/upkeep. Every restaurant closing can't simply be blamed on the P&L and the recession.
ReplyDeleteDespite Kemper being vacant, there are still alot of companies operating down there. They should have been able to do a nice lunch business and made out just fine.
Most people do not want to eat lunch with a dirty and rusty dish cart sitting in front of their table,which was my one and only experience there.
what a hole that place was. any place you see gnats flying around, don't eat there.

ReplyDeleteI remember a place called Sutera's that was in Brookside about 20 years ago but I never heard of nor seen this West Bottoms location. Where was it, exactly?

ReplyDeletenever made it to the one in the botooms, the location in westwood is delicious, though... great pizza, nice place, good pasta as well
