Down the Byline is not only the best soccer blog in Kansas City . . . The Internet news outlet also provides AMAZING INSIGHT INTO THE (PIPE) DREAMS OF PEOPLE WHO LOVE SOCCER (AND SUPER TIF)!!!
Just take a look at sketches of the grand revival (renaissance?) that a soccer team with one of the lowest attendance records in the league will bring to the blighted, old Banister Mall site.
Seriously, the dreams of soccer fans are incredible and this plan for economic development based on a sport that few people in the metro area take seriously is one of the most vivid fantasies I've ever seen . . . And I was forced to see Twilight recently!!! Quick review: The story of teenage vampires who eschew sex for love and devotion was far more realistic than plans for soccer to spark real (non-government) economic development in South KC.
All the sketches, all the PR people, the TIFs, nothing can alter the facts that KC is grossly overbuilt in retail space and south KC is one of the worst places to build anything at this point. Anything built there will fail miserably.

It's time for everyone, EVERYONE, that sees this soccer plan as the boondoggle it is, to e-mail their elected representative and voice their opposition.

Go to the State of Missouri Website, and find your rep. Then send them an e-mail. I think there might be a general address to send the same e-mail to the entire General Assembly. Do that, too.
Do this locally, as well. Enough of an outcry could, COULD, cause the state to reverse their decision on the $30 million in tax credits.
The economoy may take care of this for us, but it never hurts to voice one's opinion. I can tell you it works.
The soccer nabobs are begging the City of Kansas City to back the bonds necessary for this stupid project. Go to the Kansas City website and write the entire City Council voicing your opposition, I can tell you that they listen to what they hear...sometimes. Don't copy it to the Mayor; he's a liability and will be gone soon, anyhow. The Council is not this united monolith that they would have you believe.
It would be a major victory if this idiotic soccer idea was stopped dead in its tracks because of a huge outcry of opposition from the public.
There's a long weekend coming up for most people. A day off holiday tomorrow. A perfect time to do a little spadework and get these letters written. Save all the address in a file; I can also guarantee you'll use them again.
We squashed light rail out of existence..we can do the same with this soccer stupidity.
