TKC Question: Is it right to use the KCPD as baggage clerks simply to save a buck?

Opposition to a plan to replace airport security with the KCPD brings up a good point about the very different job duties that Airport Security Officers and police perform: Mark VanLoh, the city's aviation director said handling lost property, such as luggage, accounts for about half of the airport police work at KCI. Much of the other half includes responding to medical calls or patrolling illegally parked cars. TKC contends that there is a very real possibility that this plan might not save as much money initially suspected and will most likely result in a lot of overlap with KCI security officers staying on to handle lost bags and the like. OR there could also be a serious decline in service at KCI which wouldn't surprise me either . . . You tell me, should the KCPD work as baggage clerks?

  1. They mostly generate revenue (tickets) and push paper now. Looks like carrying luggage will be much harder work. Look out for the work comp claims from all the bad backs.

  2. Will they be driving all of the Police cars to work at the airport now. Looks like the occupation to go into is midtown crime.

  3. This deal has disaster written all over it. There is no problem with security so things should stay the same. This is politicans playing games with the budget.

  4. Just what we need, more KCPD finding ways to goldbrick far away from the real crimes.
    LOLZ.
