If it wasn't tragic, it would be ironic . . . Sadly, Kansas City sacrificed longtime local businesses for Electric Avenue and now the aftermath is that outside a few chains and stale corporate venues . . . There's STILL not much to do downtown. The worst part is that the crowd of JoCo people still aren't paying off the bonds for the place as yet another downtown destination closes. Tanner's (my second favorite bar) closes . . . Thank you for the genius plan Cordish!!! An even better headline from RDM: Coward & White District claims another victim

WOW.....this is tragic
ReplyDeleteI lived 2 blocks from Tanner's when living in Quality Hill, and frequented it to watch NFL football on Sunday's (I'm not a Chiefs fan but they were always accommodating and put my team's game on a TV somewhere) and to just stop and have a beer after work. The $10.95 16oz KC ribeye/potato/salad was one of the best dollar for dollar value IN the metro area.
Damn shame that P&L is killing homegrown, established businesses.....if Tanner's can't make it, I'm sure The Quaff and other bars aren't far behind.
I will also say this however; Tanner's $5 cover charge on Friday and Saturday nights could NOT have helped their cause, especially when someone could get in P&L and drink/hang out in the "living room" for free.

ReplyDeleteThat is just the point, all local businesses are struggling to compete with the tax subsidized Cordish project. Do any research at all and you will discover that is there strategy. To outspend and outpromote their local competition for about four years until there is none.
We are going to lose classic places all over the city.
I didn't think it would get this bad this quick. Wow. Here's the list of closings since it opened: Tanner's, Paddy O'Quigley's, Mi Cocina, that New Orleans restaurant downtown (can't remember name). And I'd guess that the Quaff, River Market Brewery, Reverse and plenty of places like Saddles and the Zoo Bar will be closing soon. But on the other hand, places like Nara and JP Wine Bar are thriving, even though they're right next to the P&L. I think Willie's is probably doing pretty well still.
ReplyDeleteThe sad part about Tanner's/O'Quigley's is that there is no real sports bar in the P&L and those two fit the bill.
I'm really torn. Tanners sucked, but so does the PnL.
ReplyDeleteHmm, what to do, what to do. Guess I will continue to spend my money in my community and ignore the continued failure of KCMO.
And I am NOT in JoCo.
People tried to get a warning printed about what the Cordish results have been in other cities and no one would print the "opinions" Any time that protection is given in the form of subsidies and free police presence the game is tilted in favor of the one who gets the "protection"
ReplyDeleteK - I stand corrected. In the story in the Star this morning, the attorney for Tanner's stated that it was not because of the P&L.

I heard from a source of mine that Cordish will steal bands from the Brick.
ReplyDeleteReally.
The P&L is good for this city whether you support it or not. It is inevitable that bars and restaurants will struggle that don't have a strong faithful crowd that frequents it. The Plaza is still thriving, as is new developments in the Northland and Johnson County.
ReplyDeleteLet's just face it, Tanners was a good bar, but nothing great. The Mango room had horrible service and no atmosphere. Paddy O'Quigleys had a bad layout.
Let's not let our city get behind others, we needed an entertainment district adjacent to the Sprint Center and we got it.
I hate to say it, but Tanner's closed itself...I have been a faithful Tanner's patron for nearly 15 years...87th St., 119th St., Wornall...
ReplyDeleteAfter two years of the worst service ever encountered at a Bar, I finally quit going to the Downtown location...The staff there as a whole made you feel like your being there was an inconvenience to them.
