KC Baby love on MLK Day!!!

Human rights even for the unborn, even if they happen to be minorities . . . It's a nice concept to ponder today as a group of Kansas City folk took to the street in order to voice their outrage and encourage KCPD Chief Corwin to fire officers who refused to give medical treatment to a pregnant woman who pleaded that she was bleeding:
A group of black Kansas Citians is speaking out against a judge's recommendation that a Kansas City police officer get her job back.

The police chief wants to fire Officer Melody Spencer after she refused to get medical help for a pregnant black woman who repeatedly requested it. The woman later suffered a miscarriage . . .

Half a dozen people gathered in front of the Martin Luther King mural to urge police commissioners to terminate Spencer and her partner, Officer Kevin Schnell.
Actually it's the counter arguments that really interest me. People unquestioningly supporting the officers often note the suspects criminal history and thereby imply that neither she nor her child deserved medical treatment because of the lady's misdeeds - It's a horribly cruel, incorrect and morally repugnant position to hold but, as the protesters point out, if the lady in question would have been white there would have been no end to public outrage . . . Also, it's nice to see some folks can see through the racial angle of this story altogether and realize that, in essence it is very much a "right to life" case.

  1. Getting this woman to the hospital any sooner would not have prevented the miscarriage. People just need to get a clue.

  2. How do you know that? Are you her doctor? Did you examine her? And what about her right to life. Her offenses were nothing that warranted the death penalty but she could have died from her treatment. Stop the racism and just admit that this woman was treated without dignity and against police procedure. Please Chief Corwin keep your promise to fire these two officers. The Kansas City Police are much better than that.

  3. It doesnt matter if she would or wouldnt have miscarried. It doesnt matter what color she was. It really isnt a matter of what if's and suppositions. What matters is that the 2 police officers didnt follow policy, and then jail staff failed to follow policy as well. Insted of lowering standards for becoming a cop, they need to raise the standards. So the cops failed to do their job, they potentially contributed to the miscarriage, the lawsuit will cost the KCPD and the city. Both of the cops screwed the pooch, I know lets let them have their jobs back! That will create even more animosity and outrage, awesome idea.
