Here's an exclusive, tasty TKC inside scoop (or something):
Recently an interesting budget item approved for Kansas City Public Schools was brought to my attention.
Remember - part of the reason the School Board booted/pressured Mr. Amato had to do with some of the pricey programs he installed.
Turns out that in his absence the District spent BIG BUCKS (thousands upon thousands) on just a few African drums.
Of course I'm familiar with the African-centered curriculum that has won such high praise from the media but hasn't really translated into better test scores or any quantifiable improvement in the District overall . . . Still, the big bucks spent on this endeavor seems kind of disconcerting.
Actually, the HUGE AMOUNT paid for a few drums brings back bad memories of Russian fencing coaches and useless Olympic sized swimming pools . . . Clearly, the District's appetite for luxury items hasn't changed much.
I'm sure they'll makes use of the SUPER EXPENSIVE DRUMS but when folks learn the amount we're talking about they might think twice . . . KC Schools haven't prepared their students for much but I hope that their idea of success is something more substantial than the d-bags who make a nuisance of themselves at the Loose Park Drum circle during the Summer.
but hasn't really translated into better test scores
ReplyDeleteTony, please get your facts straight. Chick has HIGHER standardized scores than the state and district average.

Don't give me that crap about standardized tests being bogus. You can't say "hey the test show they are bad" in one breath then say "hey the test if bogus" in the other.
There are tons of sucky schools in the KCMO District. If you want, I can get you a long list of them.
Why is it that the only KCMO schools you ever mention BY NAME are the handful of good school? Then you put them down.
Put down the board and the district all you want. Everyone knows they deserve it.
But please, will you quit pissing on the one or two bright spots we have?
Amato's big expenditure was for the reading program which is where his wife worked the deals.
ReplyDeleteThis guy didn't even have a Doctorate he had to hire a woman to front for him and his lack of an educational degree.
Is TKC racist against African Americans?
ReplyDeleteNothing like having a African-centered curriculum to help plan out your career, good luck on finding that job that caters to that kind of educational background.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Tony cares about any of this, he just wanted to post that picture.

ReplyDeleteAfrican centered is a teaching style, not a subject matter. It is like learning with the Montessori or Socratic method. It is not like saying I went to Music or engineering school. Besides the Chick is an elementary school. When was the last time you put your elementary school on your resume?
For whatever reason, the kids going to those schools learn more than most kids in the district. So why knock it?
negros are a hoot!
ReplyDeleteHere's the fundamental difference between blacks and other races. Other races want their children to succeed when they grow up. They spend millions on new computer systems to make sure their kids have the edge as they get older and stay up with what's current. These are forward thinking people. It appears blacks want to live in the past. They want to go back to their roots and learn to beat on the drum. So whose fault is it later in life when the blacks cannot compete with the other races? The point is, these leaders of the KCSD do not have the best interest of their students at heart. I'm sure those drums will end up in the President's parlor one day when everyone has forgotten about them. So in a way, I guess they are forward thinkers... but only for selfish reasons... definitely, not for the well being of their children.
ReplyDeleteHow sad.
So how much were the damn drums? Are you waiting for the Star to come up with the cost?
ReplyDeleteDrums are important for blacks to call to each other. Kind of like smoke signals for Indians.

ReplyDeleteAre you as ignorant as you sound?
If you actually looked at the Missouri Assessment Program scores, you will see that Chick performs well above the state average. Maybe drums help teach reading and math skills better than computers?
Claiming that Chick performs well above the state average is like saying someone who is an idiot-savant is smarter than a retard.
ReplyDelete"If Buckwheat hits the shiney circular apparatus 2 times and Shaquita hits her shiney circular apparatus 3 times... How many times more did Shaquita hit her shiney thing than Buckwheat".
Ahh... that would be threve?
"If Buckwheat hits the shiney circular apparatus 2 times and Shaquita hits her shiney circular apparatus 3 times... How many times more did Shaquita hit her shiney thing than Buckwheat".
ReplyDeleteI don't think that question is on the Missouri Assessment Program standardized tests.
Get over it. Face it your little white girl at her little white suburban school can't read as good as the little black boys in the African centered inner city school.
Have you ever seen "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". Maybe you should check it out.

Read GOOD? GOOD? (sigh)
The "African Centered" Drum curriculum is a joke. The expensive drums were made by the guy that heads up the classes so he charged the district what he wanted to and pocketed the $$. Talk about "perks". The district needs to look into this, those same quality drums could have been purchased from musicians friend for a 1/20th the cost! Students don't use professional line isntruments - they use cheaper, more sturdy stuff. This was a HUGE rip off by the guy that runs the class.
