From Prime Buzz: "Kansas City Council committee recommended today that AEG Kansas City get the five-year contract to run the American Royal Complex. AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) had already gotten the long-term agreement to run the Sprint Center and a five-year contract to manage Kemper Arena." Thanks to this move and the work of former Mayor Kay . . . KC is effectively governed by entertainment corporations, the implications of this can't be explained on a postage stamp (or in a blogger post) so obviously Mayor Funky doesn't care . . . Can somebody explain how this is really any kind of "reform" from business as usual in KC?

You forgot that they also run the River Market.

I hate to agree with you on this one but I do Tony. I have no idea why Funkhouser and the City Council are making sure that AEG has a monopoly over every entertainment venue in Kansas City. It's scary actually.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise Kemper Arena would fall into disrepair- they can't compete directly with Sprint.
ReplyDeleteThey do not have a monopoly on entertainment venues. Sandstone/Verizon Wireless isn't AEG owned. Sandstone is the 3rd largest venue in KC Metro for music. (14,000)
