Anti-immigrant and racist sentiment is sweeping the Western world once again.
The folks who provide the namesake of my favorite snack cakes (Swiss Cake Rolls) are openly supporting racist political campaigns and considering the prospect of employing tactics not seen since the Nazi regime. Via Americablog.
And, from a media studies perspective, the ad featured above is interesting and obviously effective.
I'm somewhat surprised that we haven't seen these types of ads gain more mainstream approval here in the U.S., where the sentiment regarding "security" is exactly the same only American anti-immigrant voices rely on the cowardly employment of codewords and compulsive refusal to acknowledge the xenophobia that underlies the efforts and rhetoric of the current anti-immigrant movement personified in Kansas City by Frances Semler who has stated her opposition to ALL immigrants - illegal and undocumented alike.
Still, it's important to understand that at the heart of every anti-immigrant movement is the sentiment of the ad featured above . . . Which doesn't really need any translation.
I'm against Illegal and undocumented immigrants as well. Unless they have large breasteses.

ReplyDeleteHow about this. If you and those that make up your hard working immigrant stock are so noble then why don't you work on the country you are from? Kinda lame to just bail from you own country and leave all those other poor bastards there. This isn't the 1890's the worlds population has increased sixfold and things are a bit more complicated in case you hadn't noticed.
