Let My People GO!!! Who will be the first to cry racism when it comes to Indy schools wanting out of the KC District?
I've been thinking about the 7 Independence Schools who are begging/pleading/trying their best to escape the clutches of the KC School District.
It seems like something is missing from this debate.
Really, there is talk of educational standards, the will of the people and all of the grassroots support for the change in Independence . . . But something just isn't right.
Finally I figured out what was missing:
There has yet to be one public accusation of racism!!!
So now I'm seriously wondering who is going to cast the first stone.
Superintendent Amato hasn't done it yet but still maintains that the best place for the 7 schools in question is with the KC District.
Without a doubt, most people realize there is a racial component to this decision but there is no telling when someone is FINALLY going to say it to the media.
The move will take away a great many white students from the KC District and it only provides further embarrassment years after desegregation efforts cost the State billions and proved worthless. And, like it or not, part of the Indy efforts to get out of the KC School District are, in fact, racially motivated even though they're using codewords and playing the geography card. The fact is that that there is an obvious disconnect between the people of Independence and the predominately Black administration of KC Schools and the School Board.
Still, the topic of race hasn't made it into the discussion . . . YET.
So I'm taking bets . . . I'm guessing that at least one of the following people will bring up the topic of race and either directly or indirectly accuse the thousands of supporters of this move of wanting to leave the KC District just because there are so many Black students, teachers and administrators . . . Never mind the decades of failure and shrinking enrollment of KC Schools. Here's my best bet as to who cries racism first:
I suppose they could find a white person to plead their case but Joe Miller has given up spinning Oprah-esque stories in favor of shilling for the Mayor. So, they'll either have to find another white person to do their bidding or say it themselves . . . Still, if one of these people doesn't use bring up the racial component to this discussion I'm going to be disappointed . . . Because it's there, it's just not the most important aspect of this proposed change.
Really, the reason I support the people in Independence making this move (other than my penchant for mullets) is not only because it represents a grassroots Democratic effort but also because it serves to highlight the dismal state of affairs and history of KC Schools. I don't see it as a step backward . . . More of a very rude wakeup call really. As a brief aside: White people, don't ever say I don't support at least a few of your ideas.
Still, as the weeks progress and the debates become more heated there is no avoiding the racial aspect of this story even if it obscures the real issue regarding the horrible management of KC Schools over decades . . . In fact, that may be the point.
I hope Independence can get its schools out of the pit of horror that is the KC school district. Racist? Who cares? Is quality education racist? Why suffer with shitty schools? That's not racist. That's common sense.
ReplyDelete"Racist? Who cares?"
ReplyDeleteI do.
Racism? Where? Damn I was sleeping...now Whitlock's probably gonna beat me to it.
ReplyDeleteThis effort doesn't have anything to do with race, its economic. The concentration of poverty in the district has resulted in so little parental involvement, and the chaos that reigns in the schools, that parents who have the resources send their children to parochial or private schools (except where they have access to the few quality charter schools). The folks in western Independence and Sugar Creek have decided they want value from their tax dollars and have chosen a different route.
ReplyDeletePrior to the recent property reappraisal effort, the tax surcharge for living in the KCMOSD and not using the schools was minimal. Now it is significant, particularly with the failure of the School board to rool back the tax levy to the increase in annual cpi(which all other MO schoold districts are required to do). We are now faced with a renewed abandonment of the District as middle class parents move to districts characterized by a higher level of parental involvement or a substantial decline in real estate values, either of which will be bad for KC.
This isn't about race, it's about the concentration of poverty and the ease with which one can avoid its impact by moving across the state line or school district line.
the predominately Black administration of KC Schools and the School Board has failed time and again to step away from their "I am a powerful black person" personas to do anything but make KCMO schools worse and proliferate the agenda of trying to make sure the KCMO district is entirely black.
ReplyDeleteKCMO schools are a joke, and I wouldn't blame every citizen of the city for pulling their children out of that train wreck.
3 kinds of people live in KCMO; people without kids, broke ass people with kids, affluent families that can afford private school. Otherwise you are forced to move to the burbs for schools that value education over political power and racist clout.
My parents were in the first graduating class of Van Horn. It was a beautiful school for many years. When KC took over the school itself was allowed to degrade into ruin. Who gives a shit who goes there, the physical plant was allowed to rot, I am not even sure it is still open. Oddly, right up the street sits Chrisman High and even though the school itself is older, it is looking better than ever. Why? Cause it isn't under the control of the KC schools district!
ReplyDeleteLet's face it, the structure for KC schools is broken. Abandon ship KC and move on.
As a mother of a student in the Independence School district, I welcome these schools and students into our district and hope that the vote will reflect that. Lets not forget the economics involved either. Those shools in the KCMO school district that will move bring alot of $$$$
ReplyDeleteIndependence.........first the Metro buses , now the schools. I guess the town wants to be independent.
ReplyDelete2 things;
ReplyDelete1. I thought Tony would be the one to erroniously drop the race card. I am impressed that he didn't.
2. Andre Riley of the Examiner (who IMHO is the best columnist/reporter in the Metro area) has written a couple of columns against the annexation. He has not dropped the race card (he rarely does, only when appropriate). I think he is way off base, but he does bring some intelligent points to the argument.

ReplyDeleteAnd there are those of us who work for the city, and have no choice but to live here.
Anyonymous: Just live in a different school district! Look, KCMO is within several districts.
