Back to school money quote: "Few people want to admit that a lot of parents won't send their kids to KCMO schools simply because of racism."

Here is a truly great and thoughtful post about the KC School District.

And while I may not agree with the optimistic outlook . . . I do like the basic premise of the post.

Still, it's important that this local blogger points out that not every, single one of KC's school are failing . . . Just most of them. For me that's not exactly inspiring but you have to take hope where you can find it . . . And as another school year starts, in a district that has seen a mass exodus over a generation mostly due to integration I guess it's important to try to be hopeful and not think about the billions dumped down the drain over the years on KC Public Schools which still (by and large) don't live up to most expectations of parents for whatever reason.

  1. The sad fact is that, except for Lincoln Prep, every school is light years behind any other first or second ring suburban schools.

Even sending them to a quasi dodgy school like SM West or Olathe North has better ACT scores.

If your kid is good at sports, Lincoln Prep is not where you want to send them either.

Bullying is also a serious concern in school, and it frequently breaks down along racial lines. So unless your non-black student has a thick skin and you cant afford a place in merriam you should probably go elsewhere.

  2. I would never send my kids to any school in KC. I'm white. Damn right its a race thing.

I moved here from out of state. I NEVER had anyone utter blantant racist remarks, or make threats based on my race until I moved here. I never experienced ANY racism from anyone until I moved to KC.

So yes, it's a race thing. I don't want my kids going to school with black racists or be targeted because he or she is white. So what?
