Stereotyping dog owners in the urban core

A recent article on Dog Fighting in Kansas City contains some pretty great information and by the time you're finished reading it . . . You should be scared of dogs, minorities, minorities who own dogs, hip-hop and your own shadow.
In Kansas City, experts and law enforcement officers see the greatest increase in dog fighting in urban settings where as the owners gain 'street cred[ibility]' by having the winning dog. That confirms Karen's suggestion of status symbol as a motivator. The problem in Kansas City in comparison to other cities is the relatively weak laws regarding dog fighting. One must be caught in the act to be prosecuted, where as in other cities, if a person has paraphernalia they can be charged.
However, a local official noted that "We see more of the impromptu street fights than the organized fights." So, clearly dog fighting isn't exactly part of the "culture" here in KC . . . And if it was then I guess I can look forward to an influx of Korean restaurants that would signify the tasty end result of the trend.

  1. that article was as far reaching as some of your own tony. i will say that this is the best quote of the whole thing;
    "Karen points out that pit bulls have an unfair bad reputation, points out that in many cases they are better pets than labs, that actually bite more often (but with a less viscious bite)."
    living in the northeast and owning a staffordshire, i will say that i have yet to see any evidence of dog fighting occuring in our neighborhood. there are plenty of stray's but no pits and none that have been fought, as far as i can tell. that story is merely a response to the vick scandal and nothing more than a fright piece for the masses.

  2. Kansas City is behind in its time. Before Funkhouser there has been a case of poor leadership.
