Is Elton John representative of Kansas City? Are there enough ghey people and sentimental old white ladies to fill the Sprint Center on opening night?

When I first heard the Elton John was going to be the opening act at The Sprint Center I have to say that I had mixed feelings.

Obviously, there is no one with a bigger reputation in the music industry than Elton John.
John has been one of the dominant forces in rock and popular music, especially in the 1970s. John has sold more than 250 million albums plus hundreds of millions of singles, making him one of the most successful artists of all time. He has more than 50 Top 40 hits including seven consecutive #1 U.S. albums, 59 Top 40 singles, 16 Top 10, 4 #2 hits, and nine #1 hits. His success has had a profound impact on popular music and has contributed to the continued popularity of the piano in rock and roll. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Elton John #49 on their list of The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
HOWEVER, here's a question that nobody is asking:

Is Elton John representative of Kansas City's culture, people, point of view?

The guy has done some amazing work in raising awareness about AIDS and he's even attacked Censorship in the U.S. both of which are great causes and things that most people in this country care about deeply.

Also, he has been an outspoken critic of the war in Iraq which is also a position that a lot of people in this town hold as well.

But then, let's consider that John was quoted last year in a candid interview saying that he thinks that religion should be banned because it promotes hatred against homosexuals.

That's not exactly a cause that would get a lot of support in the middle of the Bible belt.

Also, the guy has been just as lavish with his money as his performances . . . It's been noted that the dude has spent as much as £30 million in just under two years - an average of £1.5 million a month with a notable £293,000 on flowers between January 1996 and September 1997 . . . That's not exactly a lifestyle that speaks to the people of Kansas City.

And let's be honest . . . The guy has had a brilliant career but it's not like he's on the top of his game . . . His hits are fewer and far between now and they often come in the form of songs on animated movie soundtracks and remakes of his formerly great songs. His appearance in Kansas City seems to merely confirm the longstanding notion that people either come here to start or finish their career . . . KC rarely sees trends, athletes or performers at their peek.

But more importantly, Elton John just doesn't seem like an act that "says" Kansas City. Let's be honest about where we live . . . This is a cowtown. A top level country music performer would have been more appropriate considering that so many of the high ranking radio stations in this area are dedicated to the format - A fact that I don't like either but that's reality.

Elton John is a safe bet and his built in fan base of ghey people and hip, old white ladies probably have enough money to afford the tickets that are undoubtedly going to be high priced. However, it just seems like the choice doesn't jibe well the character of this town . . . A high living, British ghey guy who hates religion isn't really the Kansas City that I know.

Finally, even if you think Elton John is the best and most wonderful way to begin KC's 300 million dollar bet . . . The follow-up of an empty arena without an anchor tenant still doesn't inspire much confidence.

  1. haven't you ever travelled to another state to see a band? i've flown to california before to see a band. that show will sell out i'm sure. it doesn't matter if he represents kc or not; a shitload of people will be travelling here to see him. of course i won't be there because i'm not into that pop crap.

  2. Wow-What a weird post, Tony. I don't get it.What I do know is the show will sell out, he is a HUGE and high profile performer and his song "Rocket Man" took on extra significance once he publicly revealed he was a homosexual.

  3. Why do you always have to be SUCH a hater? I think you make a lot of great points in your posts, but the fact that you:

    a) hardly ever say anything positive
    b) seem to have a problem with every thing that goes on in KC

really dilutes what you're saying. I guess I'm confused...what do you like about Kansas City? Have you considered relocating (I know you live in your mom's basement but surely someone of your wit and intelligence could shed their apathy and get out of here...)?

  4. Elton John no more represents KC than you do (thank god).

To hell with a popular country musician - if the Sprint Arena were to debut playing to the majority of local tastes, Billy Graham's son would open; Minnie Pearl would be ressurected for one set; and the headliner would be the entire original cast of Hee-Haw.

Having said that, Elton will sell out and rock the crowd - good choice.

Money NEVER has anything to do with true personal identification - it ALWAYS looks to how people WANT to see themselves.

stay with what you know: hatred and stupidity.

  5. I have to disagree with you here Tony. I have seen Elton in concert several times and he is amazing and puts on one of the best shows imaginable. Everybody in KC is in for a treat and he wouldn't have come back here if not of such a notable event as the Sprint Center opening.

But then again, it's easy for me to get excited because I can probably get free tickets for this one and I've paid as much as $700 to see him perform in the past.

  6. Play some Skynard!

  7. I love me some EJ, if only he could get Kris Kobach and Phill Kline to come out and sing Bennie and the Jets with him, that would rawk.

  8. I mean Elton John is one of those talents that transcends gayness. Him, MJ and Prince could sell out Fred Phelps arena and get a standing ovation...

Its not like the Sprint Center is opening with Wham! or something.

I guess my point is Elton John is a bad mother fucker (nhjic)

  9. It's just a concert in an arena dumbass...

  10. Agreed. Elton John will rawk.

And I don't want to hear freebird or Country music.

  11. d5h is right on the money. When MJ played Arrowhead, all kinds of people showed up. We have not had a serious concert in this town since then. FrogPJ's is right, people will travel, and thus spend money here. Despite how long EJ has been around, he has managed to sell a few seats Tony. I am not an EJ fan myself, but they could have picked something a LOT worse.

  12. He'll sell out easy, and he commands quite a price.

Not a fan but at least its not country music.

  13. We have no cows here. Your average Swiss village has more cows, not to mention more cosmopolitan verve.

  14. What the hell does his lifestyle have to do with his being booked as the opening act at the Sprint Center?

    does 2+2=6 now?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Well, Tony, I'm sorry - and I understand your disappointment - that Adam Ant isn't coming to town, but they did they best they could do.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ooh...I would SO go to the opening if Adam Ant were the act!

  17. Tony's right. Who needs Elton John? The Sprint Center should have opened with a real attraction that would turn on Kansas City. Hmm, who could it be? Clay Aiken? Too closeted. Lindsay Lohan? Too drunk. Ruben Blades? Too Ethnic. The Hudson Brothers? Too 1970s. Aretha? Too fat. Michael Jackson? Too fucked-up (he'll play the new Olathe stadium). Beyonce? Too attractive. Elvis? Too dead. Joshua Bell? Too highbrow. Britney Spears? Too trashy.
Will someone call Reba McIntyre and see if she's available?

  18. Admit it, Tony: If you and your mom could score tickets to this show you'd go in a heartbeat, and scream right along to "Crocodile Rock." Am I right?

  19. Tony two weeks ago: Parking? WHAT THE FUCK ABOUT PARKING? Where will we cram ONE BILLION CARS IN DOWNTOWN? It's DOOMED!!!!

Tony last week: Sprint Arena is a failure. No acts in the arena. Failure failure failure.

Tony this week [now that he has been proved to be wrong on ALL fronts]: Duh, uh, umm, Elton John, is like queer. And queer people are um, not selling out in KC. KC people are a monolithic block of people with the same brain in different bodies. He doesn't "speak to KC"

Never mind that you're all for minorities, your prejudiced and narrow world view has quickly been proven a lie. For all your talk about hispanics and blacks, you are a homophobe.

All that other stuff you're brining up about Elton John: It's because you have a problem with gays.

You want to see KC fail, and you hate gays. Nothing you ever write is positive. Or accurate.

Tony, seriously, you're getting more and more retarded each day. It's laughable and you really should be embarrassed by yourself. Change the name of this blog so it's not Tony's KC. Because I wouldn't want my name on something so wrong. And homophobic.

  20. Tony, this is such a stretch. Why do you care ow Elton John spends his money? He is a great performer. You should go to this show!

    ReplyDelete
  21. Instead of Elton John they should have the "El Mariachi" , "El Conjunto NorteƱo" or "New Mexican Disaster Squad". yay baby.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Elton John is sooooo sessy!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Middle aged, bald, fat, recovering coke addict, queer. Hehe,,that's a KC sellout for sure!!

  24. Tony,
I like you but this is one of your dumbest posts.
In your opinion, what act would be representative of Kansas City? No such thing exists.
Quit being such a Chicken Little. You are starting to sound like Mark Funkhouser.

  25. "You are starting to sound like Mark Funkhouser."

    BWHAAAAA!!!

  26. As usual, Tony, you have a negative attitude towards anyone who is in the news, music, or entertainment world. I think secretly you are jealous of these people. Your way of dealing with that jealousy is to put them down and say or show something negative about them. You're wrong about Elton John. He will be a sellout. You know, Tony, people that know you have told me some very nasty things about you. I have come to believe that these rumors are most likely true. You have negatively affected a lot of people's lives. It will probably come back to you some day.
