Fireworks Furor

I don't think I could ever get worked up about fireworks but then again I don't own any property other than my new sneakers.

Still, with the 4th of July landing in the middle of the week it looks as if a lot of the locals will be bitching about fireworks until Friday . . . Of course the Fireworks are illegal in KC proper and several surrounding cities but that doesn't really stop anyone from taking part . . . People complain and gripe really loudly about the topic but in the end nothing ever really changes.

AND . . . For the most part the fireworks are pretty harmless unless you're one of the poor souls who gets a hand blown off or has your housed burnt to a crisp.

THEREFORE, it's clear that an almost perfect comparison can be drawn between illegal immigration and illegal fireworks.

Both illegal immigration and illegal fireworks are fun, mostly harmless and responsible for a lot of commerce whereas the opponents of both of these (not so) important issues are loud and obnoxious and basically believe the whole world should follow their directives which are based in the minutia of a legal code that is nearly impossible and completely impractical to enforce across such a great expanse. Also, there are huge fireworks stands (along with a bunch of brown people - heaven forbid!) in plain sight and I don't see anybody in a rush to shut them down (or wash their own dishes for a competitive wage).

SO, if compromise isn't an option and the downfall of the (dreadful) immigration bill simply proved that beating up on Mexicans is easier than winning a war in Iraq. AND most folks overlooked the fact that the Republicans caving into the talk radio crowd is a quick fix but in the end they didn't address the so-called problem IN ADDITION TO alienating a lot of Latino voters by acknowledging a small but vocal contingent who hate Mexicans while so many more people seem to think burritos and my Grandma aren't that bad:

Taking a pragmatic view on a divisive issue, a large majority of Americans want to change the immigration laws to allow illegal immigrants to gain legal status and to create a new guest worker program to meet future labor demand, the poll found.

In light of all this, the only thing that remains is to ask a simple question that compares and contrasts two common "illegal" activities in the Kansas City area . . . The question is simple:

Which is worse: Mexican immigrants or illegal fireworks?



Just like any KC vote, the polls are rigged so vote early and often as if your house was on fire.
