Recently, behind the Buzz Blog paywall, Yael Abouhalkah has been out to do some damage control among all the folks rich enough to afford their luxury news service.
Sad thing is, his take on things is so out of touch and skewed in the Mayor's favor that he's basically making up the news as he goes along.
But it's not all bad and he has at least one decent point.
The Semler story is over.
Six weeks later, Semler is still on the board, going around town looking at various parks and recreation sites. So far, she has weathered the protests.Fist of all, it's good to know that talk radio stations based in Johnson County have such control over KC's political scene . . . Secondly, in a desperate attempt to back the pony he pushed into office Señor Boom Shakalaka simply proves that he is completely blind to political realities in Kansas City and has absolutely no knowledge about KC's Latino Community.
Why? In part because her opponents ran out of steam. It turned out Semler's controversial membership in the Minutemen group didn't bother a lot of other people. Or at least bother them that much. A number of newspaper letter writers and radio callers favored her stance against illegal immigration, for instance.
Certain naive souls in KC expected the Mayor to rescind his decision or ask the old lady to take a hike . . . I never held such lofty notions. What KC saw when the Latino leaders along with most of the City Council and a slew of other people in this town stood against a so-called hate group was pure political theater intended to see how the Mayor weathered criticism. And it's safe to say that Mayor Funky won some points . . . From the folks in Johnson County and the outlying area on his backing of the anti-immigration lady. Still, his milquetoast endorsement of Semler BUT NOT HER IDEAS makes his support seem tacit at best and not really the big win that local anti-Latino forces were expecting.
In the end, the Latino leadership speaking out against Mayor Funky's silly choice merely gave the Mayor a black eye. Additionally and much more importantly, the mini-controversy created an opportunity for Latinos to forge a better relationship with City Council Members and create/maintain a dialog with people across the City who are interested in standing against vigilante and hate based groups.
As a brief aside, I have to admit that I'm pretty disappointed that the main criticism directed toward local Latino leaders like myself (the most important Latino in KC) was that we should simply be quiet . . . That's the gist of what most white people said was basically that Latinos should "shut up and support a cause that seeks to put people like your grandparents on trains like cattle." Kind of discouraging considering that every weeknight the cable airwaves are dominated by white dudes screaming their head off about whatever makes them mad. It goes beyond double standard and really points out some of the unspoken notions of "supremacy" that shape our discourse.
Anyway . . .
Since the mini-controversy, the stupid sentiments of the Funkhouser campaign have lost a bit of their luster and the Mayor's weakness when it comes to compromise, his stubbornness and the bumbling nature of his support staff have been revealed. All things considered, that's a pretty effective result of one press conference and a community meeting.
And this leads me to the lesson of the piñata. Of course there is religious significance to the cultural item but don't let that confuse you.
The piñata is one of those great devices that teaches children about the nature of social interaction, politics and power. The blindfolded kid with a stick doesn't benefit by breaking open the piñata, in fact a smart kid won't crack the thing open if he's lucky enough to locate it. Yet, the other kids in the crowd encourage the kid to bust the thing open so that candy will rain down . . . But the aggressor in this circumstance won't see as great a benefit as those kids in the crowd who aren't blindfolded. The kid at the center of the game must learn to control his machismo/aggressiveness.
The lesson is simple, the smarter kids will learn to ignore taunts, encouragement and direction from the crowd and instead work only to loosen or crack the piñata instead of breaking it apart . . . So that when his turn is over, he stands to rake in more candy.
When it comes to the political discourse in this community, the Latino Leadership has done a decent job in revealing that Mayor Funky isn't the reformer that represented himself as, he's not a charismatic man and his promises of inclusiveness and or even leadership that isn't particularly embarrassing didn't hold together for even his first month in office.
So while the media is disappointed that they didn't get their blood bath and Funkhouser supporters gloat over a pyrrhic victory, it's pretty much politics as usual.
I think the end of Semler story is just the beginning of the Mayor's problems with any group that doesn't buy his line of B.S. completely . . . Also, just like all politics, it basically amounted to a lot of talking with very little change.
You know, I've heard that story about the pinata before but you tell it way better.
ReplyDeleteAlso, I disagree with everything else in this post and I think you're an idiot when it comes to politics.
Why don't you write more about things you understand in greater detail like your experiences in KC? That seems like it would be more productive and entertaining. All this talk about politics is just repetitive, boring and hateful.
I like your theory about the piñata too Tony. But I think Abouhalkah's take on the events isn't completely out of line. There were a lot of people expecting more protests and press releases from Latino leaders on this subject and they never really happened.
ReplyDeleteFrom the folks I've spoken with it wasn't because of lack a motivation from people in your community but because there wasn't anyone leading the charge.
While there were several behind closed doors meetings I think everyone was disappointed that we didn't here even more from people on the record.
And while you may be right about a black eye for the Mayor. I think he got off with a lot less criticism than some people in City Hall expected and that probably works to the benefit of everyone in the long run considering that both the Mayor and the latinos will have to work with each other again at some point.
Rather than focus on her connection to the Minuteman vigilante group, it would have been more effective if the protesters had called attention to her connection to the Eagle Forum. The Eagle Forum is on the record against ALL immigration -- documented and undocumented. The Eagle Forum also opposes public education of all children, reproductive rights, AIDS education and treatment, multiculturalism, LGBT civil rights and many other things that lead directly to a civilized world. Semler's connection to the The Eagle Forum is every bit as bigoted as the Minuteman connection but the former would have assured a coalition of groups joined the fight against the Empress Gloria and her Vulcan Consort.
ReplyDeleteI think the leadership did what they could. They stood against the voices of many. A bunch of rural conservatives on talk radio and or well off conservativces hiding in the city that write to the Star are by no means a majority. There is a lot more to be heard on this as Semler and Mucci have a long racist past, which they have voiced during previous City Elections.
ReplyDeleteIt's illegal to sell narcotics.
ReplyDeleteIt's legal to buy prescription drugs at Walgreens.
It's illegal to look or sell child porn on the computer.
It's legal to read Tony's blog.
It's illegal to drive 100 mph down the highway.
It's illegal for Mexicans to cross the border without a visa.
It's legal to belong to the Minuteman to support your country from people breaking the law.
Do you see the difference between legal and illegal?
I will defend her right to hold bigoted political views thepaintman -- although I doubt she has that much respect for civil liberties; but my mayor should have more respect for ALL the people of Kansas City than to appoint a bigot to a honorable position.
ReplyDeleteThis has never been about her legality, it has been about her abhorrent political beliefs and by extension those of the Gloria and Mark Administration.
anal.........The Ghey's think if you dont agree with ghey marriages than your a bigot.
ReplyDeleteI like how Paintman draws this picture of how illegal immgrants cross the border without a visa. The majority of illegal immigrants come here legally. I also like how the dbag to no surprise points out Mexicans. Classic anti-immgration rhetoric which always lacks intelligence. He also didn't fail us by bringing "Ghey's" into the conversation. What a tool. Turn off talk radio and pick up a book you moron; and not one written by your favorite conservative. The idea is to increase your intelligence.
ReplyDeleteI also like how he compares Mexicans to Child Predators and Drug Dealers. Guess who is the worlds top consumer of both porn, legal and illegal, and drugs? US CITIZENS. Your stupidity amazes me.
ReplyDeleteYou suck at life.
But he LOVES (No Bigot No Homo) Funkhouser.
ReplyDeleteNobody from the La Raza camp has explained why illegal aliens should be allowed to sleep in public parks. Why? As far as I understand the law that would get a citizen arrested.
ReplyDeleteThat is the real reason why they oppose her. La Raza fears that she will be logical and dictate that our parks are for the recreation of our city's citizens and not temporary housing for itenerant workers.
The majority of illegal immigrants come here legally.
ReplyDelete---------------------
After which they overstay their visa and become illegal immigrants. Is overstayig a visa somehow less illegal than making a "300" style charge across the San Ysidro border checkpoint?
anal 7/25/2007 10:23:00 PM.... your light is on but nobodies home or you are one brick short of a full load.
ReplyDeletePaintman and 2:13pm you don't want people sleeping in Parks but yet you support people that are pushing legislation to kick undocumented immigrants out of their house and onto the street, so which is it? Likewise you say assimilate but then you support legislation that would stop people from getting an education and also fine or jail anyone, including ESL teachers, that assist undocumented workers, so which is it?
ReplyDeleteYou see far right nutjobs like Francis Semler, Joyce Mucci, the Minutemen, Paintman and those leading the fight against immigration have no clue what the hell is going on. They are not aware what is reality because their head is so far up their ass. I WAS a Republican, a true Republican, which is nothing like the idiots, and their supporters who are running the GOP in MO,KS or DC. I believe that this mentality doesn't do anything positive for our society. It is pure hate speech and hate politics.
You really think their going to kick illegals out on the streets? I don't. Come on if that really happens alot of the mexicans have friends who will take them in. I don't think anything will happen to the illegals and their not going to ship them back. Nothing is going to happen. Too close to president elections even though they are 2 years away.
ReplyDeleteLike I said before. People who are against gay marriages are supposively called Bigots. People who are against Illegals coming over the border are called Bigots, vigilantes or their a hate group. If Funkhouser wants Wayne out of City Manager, the Eastside screams "Racists". Just because Wayne is Black. If Wayne was white the Eastside wouldn't give a scooter's ass about him.
If one race doesn't like what a group of people do, if right or wrong, that race starts up dissension among (their) people because they didn't get their way. They start yelling racists, bigots or do protests.
I bet half of them goes to church and you wonder instead of protesting why don't they do a prayer rally. For them to call on God for help. Instead they want to whine like a baby in order to get attention, just like a baby does to get their parents attention.
