Over the weekend there was an interesting story about the possibility of naming the entry plaza to the Sprint Center on Grand Boulevard after former Mayor Kay Barnes.
It's not a bad idea but just like everything it depends on context.
Now, let's say that the small downtown patch (heh) was used for cutting up your credit cards and then slapping yourself in the forehead. In that case, I couldn't agree more . . . And the fact that anybody wants to sign their name to an empty arena with no anchor tenant in sight makes for a perfect tribute to Mayor Kay's career.
I think it's important to honor Kansas City's history or at least acknowledge the names involved leading the charge to sink this town into debt . . . But then I don't know, maybe everything is going to work out: Downtown Kansas City could soon turn into a mecca for retail shopping, nightlife and sports fans from around the area. And all of the previous residents of the place could move to Grandview or Lee's Summit and make a brand new ghettto (!!!) - In the end I don't find it at all surprising that the (pipe) dreams of upper-class luxury condo dwellers involve minorities and po'folk completely disappearing.
a few more weeks of 'da Funk and you'll be cryin' to have Barnes back....
