Pictured above is the photo that The Star decided to go with in their coverage of Chief Corwin recommending that an officer is fired for using unnecessary force.
Personally, I think the image that KSHB used to document the case was more powerful.
In any event, Alonzo Washington describes the significance of the case clearly:
"This is why Black people don't trust the police!"
And I think that's probably the message that the second photo gets across more effectively given that the guy being slammed down on a car hood, choked and humiliated wasn't arrested and wasn't holding drugs.
People often decry the stupid "stop snitching movement" or the lack of cooperation with authorities in minority communities and then contrast those generalizations with the eagerness to work with police from some suburbanites when it comes to looking for missing white women . . . While all of the examples I've cited are drastic extremes regarding each community, I think this dramatic image and all of the unpleasantness that it implies provides ample evidence that the supposed differences in attitudes concerning the police aren't completely unjustified.
this guy has a rap sheet a mile long. my guess is he actually swallowed the crack.
ReplyDeleteIf they actually saw him swallow the drugs, they could have charged him and brought him in. Then just waited for the drugs to pass.
ReplyDeleteSo either they were not sure that he had drugs or they were lazy and didn't want to bring him in.
That's the problem when the police cross the line though, Jazo, it turns a usual suspect with a long rap sheet into an innocent victim.
ReplyDeleteThis happened in my neighborhood - by the bus stop we can't use because of all the drug dealing, right by the Bainbridge. We see little baggies and latex gloves all over the place and this is one of the hot zones for the police.
ReplyDeleteI've seen this cop repeatedly at all the neighborhood association meetings - Hyde Park, Squire Park and Ivanhoe. I couldn't get to the video but knowing what goes on in our neighborhood HOURLY, the guy probably was dealing. Totally agree with dumbass...Aside from this incident, I know I'm naive, and I know its their job not to loose their cool - but ALL races of people are held hostage by drug dealers. And unless they're caught repeatedly with large amounts of drugs NOTHING happens to them. And this cop gets to hear about it at every neighborhood meeting...and there's a good chance someone phoned in a tip or told the police there was action going on...
You really fancy yourself as the internet MLK don't you Tony? You have no other subjects, just the same dead horse over and over. I agree that it's a story worthy of your little blog but god damn man everything isn't about race all the fucking time...
ReplyDeleteBut keep it up. I am sure the three black people that log onto the net are just thrilled...
Hey guess what, bad cops do bad things to white people too...
he's a drug dealer.
ReplyDeleteMelkowski has been notorious for years and infact was suspended in 2005 for similar if not more unbecoming conduct. He should be fired and I think, we ought to start a petition to get his sorry ass out of the force. The other cop ought to be fired for standing by and doing nothing.
ReplyDeleteKCPD is getting a bad rap and frankly, I've never had a problem with the KCPD but it seems to be, as a black man, I need to be more weary whenever a White Police officer is around. These acts of wanton disregard for others is perhaps why more folks and even thugs are resorting to opposite and equal force as the recent shooting of an Officer going about his usual duties.
Melkoswki MUST GO!
