KC soon to flip its lid

The misguided mistakes of this town make for great posts at The Urbanophile as the blogger reports that local officials are studying the possibility of spending $200 million to put a deck over I-670.

Apparently, the Kansas City Star dubbed this project the "Big Lid" after Boston's Big Dig. But I'm guessing they didn't mention any of the nightmare (crushed under huge chunks of concrete) scenarios that awaited the people of Boston thanks to that ill conceived project. I only hope that if the folks in this town couldn't get a roof over Arrowhead they might also horribly fail when it comes to something that people might actually use.

  1. Not really a new idea when it comes to KC. If you've ever seen the Cordish designs for downtown redevelopment (including the KC Live project around the Sprint Center/HR Block building), they typically include mock-ups of a covered I-670 even though it's not part of the scope of the project.

  2. Just a quibble, but I wouldn't call the Big Dig ill-conceived. (Unless of course you're opposed to any large infrastructure project.) From a civil engineering standpoint the Big Dig is pretty amazing. To paraphrase General Buck Turgidson, the human element seems to have let them down, i.e., corrupt inspectors and contractors.
