Yacht Rock

Via Dallas

I did not know the term to describe the kind of rock that had an irrevocable influence over my formative years but at last I can now describe it as Yacht Rock.

Mind you, I was about 5 years old when all of these songs came out but through the magic (and majesty of AM radio) I listened to these tunes throughout my younger days, mostly accompanying my tia Theresa to aerobics class when she got stuck with me for the weekend. Factoid: Did you know that all aerobics in the 1980's was set to the tune of Yacht Rock? Word to Toto.

Here is my favorite chapter of the history of Yacht Rock, "The Back Alley Songwriting duel of 1978" Money line: "Get your dick out of your heart!" Check it:

Here are some links to the history lessons regarding Yacht Rock with some brief description by me:

What a Fool Believes - "You're a sentimental fool, Kenny!"

I'm Alright - The ascendancy of Kenny Loggins

Rossana - The song written to get in the pants of Rossana Arquette.

I believe in it - "I will do anything for smooth music"

I keep forgetting - An important wager between Kenny Loggins and Michael MacDonald. The secret story behind Warren G's "Regulate." Best (ghey) intro and probably the best overall episode . . . A must see if only to watch a rapper claim "I'm not a rapper, I'm a punk ass!"

Finally, this post has nothing to do with Kansas City other than the fact that they still play this music in every dentist's office in town.

  1. What a fool believes?

I love that song, I'm pretty sure the doobies had just discovered the synthesizer for that track and decided to put it on fucking everything.

  2. Gawd, I can't believe it. I really like most of this stuff. I feel like such a loser.
