Agroterrorism conference in Kansas City

The FBI and Joint Terrorism Task force are soon to host a conference in Kansas City, Missouri on the topic of protecting the food supply.

Normally, I throw salt on everything related to anti-terrorism propaganda but I actually think the subject of food tampering is an often overlooked aspect of Homeland Security given that I'm ulta paranoid about where I eat. In fact, last night I had a really good dinner especially because the person I ate with told me that the establishment had a really good rating from the Health Department.

But here's a thought that I'm sure won't be addressed by anyone at the conference: If so-called "illegals" are such a threat to national security then how come the U.S. has (fortunately) avoided any kind of deadly attack in the food supply given the fact that the agriculture industry is completely dependent upon undocumented immigrant workers?

Put simply, Mexicans aren't so bad when you realize that they're an integral part of the process of you getting fed.

On a much more far fetched and freaky note, hot ass Boing Boing Blogger Xeni says that the conference is really about "genetically modified foods rising up to eat their masters." And while I'm no fan of conspiracy cabrones, I have to say that the threat from Killer Tomatoes is far greater than all of the hype regarding reconquista and fear based ranting against Mexicans.

  1. mexicans are no threat to national security, but unsecured borders are. secure borders mean less illegal mexicans yes but also makes it harder for those other brown people to sneak in here... you know the ones who fly planes into buildings?

  2. Shouldn't it be "agriterrorism"? It's not agroculture, it's agriculture...

  3. Hi, I linked to this via BoingBoing. I worked for the USDA Foreign Disease-Weed Science Research Unit from 1997-2000, specifically on agroterrorism, in the baceteriology department. Agroterrorism is based on protecting our food supply; i.e. it's easier than you'd think to deploy a virus or bacteria or fungus in fields that will destroy an entire country's crop. Think what might happen if the US couldn't produce any more wheat, corn, soy, etc. You cripple a country by cutting off its food supply; agroterror research is geared towards identifying threats as early as possible, and providing remedies for them. Anyway, I hope this explains a little bit for you. All best--
