"Nah, where's your God now Moses?!"

Edward G. Robinson delivered what had to be the best line in any religious movie ever made (above) in his part in The Ten Commandments. Similarly, I missed linking a story about the roof of a local church collapsing yesterday because it was a little to sappy for me to take seriously, very much like the wounded goose story that is only news to crazy people who try to find patterns in the daily paper.

Anyway, as we approach Easter I very much doubt I'll be going to Church but I will partake in a few of my favorite religious films. Here's a sampling:
  • The Last Temptation of Christ - This is probably may favorite Easter flick because I imagine if in fact there was a guy named Jesus walking around telling everybody he was the son of God then most if not all people would have called him crazy and given him endless amounts of shit. Money line: Harry Dean Stanton's character tells The Big J.C. gone the alternate route: "If you didn't exist, I would have to invent you." Never before and not for a long time will a movie be so perfectly blasphemous . . . Unless you count Glitter.

  • The Last Supper - Not really religious but full of ethical dilemmas.

  • The Passion of The Christ - Now this is horrible but I always cheer and yell "Get that motherfucker! Get it!" during the scourging scene to the horror of anybody I'm watching it with . . . Mostly because it's funny remembering a whole nation get riled up over badly used stage blood and overacting in what was essentially a low budget movie with great grass roots marketing.

  • Spartacus - The only epic which doesn't feature the Big J.C. . . . Actually quite moving even with the insane accent of Kirk Douglas and his out of place buzz cut.

  • The Day the Earth Stood Still - The best all time Jesus flick ever made. Science Fiction rules because it doesn't have to wear it's ethos on its sleeve like most major religions or political parties.

  1. Damn you Tony, damn you! You didn't put the movie that we always watch on Easter!!! Don't be ashamed, other people watch Jesus Christ Superstar too. "What's the buzz, tell me what's a-happenin'..."

  2. Try not to turn on to problems that upset you...
Don't you know everything's alright now, everything's alright... and it's cool and the ointment's sweet...for the fire in your head and feet... close your eyes, close your eyes and relax ...think of nothing tonight...

Got the film and the popcorn...TONITE?

  3. yeah, i was gonna say "JC Superstar," too.

that's one of those films that made it into my 12-year-old soul (at the time) and has continued to do more for me than the "crucify him!" lines the congregation gets during Passion Sunday (last week's).

  4. Jesus of Nazareth is the best all time movie if I don't say so myself.

  5. I heard that roof was checked by a structural engineer a week before the thing fell and he said it was going to fall in. If the insurance is in efect that church should have a bundle to build a new one with. Didn't another roof fall in out out in South Kansas City. Maybe some one is into making roofs fall instead of fire.

  9. Ah, shit, dude--now I'm going to have to Netflix PotC just so I can sit there and yell: "Get that motherfucker! Get it!"

Though, I have to admit having giggled and even laughed at the S.O.G. getting his ass whooped like a kid at a Wrestlemania.
