The Aftermath

What happened yesterday was one of the biggest non-violent protests this town (KCK actually) has ever seen. The Mexicans (mostly Mexicans) on the street numbered in the thousands. The crowd dwarfed the many gathers at Mill Creek park (pointlessly) protesting against the war in Iraq. The march was poorly organized, last minute and thankfully did not host a single one of KC's many Latino "leaders" . . . At the very least, the March clearly demonstrated the vast listening audience of those horrible Spanish stations that my Grandma loves.

I would write more but I know my audience. The Internets is dominated by white guys with a serious inferiority complex. The Internets is home to people (like myself) who don't speak out in real life but suddenly become potential Masters of the Universe in the safety of their own home and in their underwear in front of the keyboard. So, I'll save any of the pious ranting about how much you need cheap labor. We'll just (falsely) assume that you're willing to pay more for stuff that was made with pride in the U.S. of A while the demise of the American auto industry and the outsourcing of so many high tech jobs to India prove otherwise. What's clear is that there is a growing division in this country regarding immigration but it's unclear whether Americans will chose low prices over their misguided notion that this nation will stay white. What I find obvious and what interests me more than the one of the biggest grassroots protest movements this country has seen in more than a generation is the backlash that this effort is sure to create.

I've always known that every single white person I've ever met was a racist. But what I wonder is if they love cutting brown people's throats so much that they'll gladly cut their own in the process. I don't want to get into a macro economic debate with your dumbass, because I'd win. But we'll just agree that this country was built on slave labor and maintained on cheap labor and those two things have served to make this nation great powerful.
