Local Artists are Crybabies

When the city figures out what to do about the murder rate or the potholes or the infestation of developers or sports teams demanding millions then I might care about local artists but until then they are simply just another variety of spoiled white children in my mind.

Recently, a few local artists have expressed their frustration with the city's public art program. BlogKC documents the complaints thoroughly and suggests that keeping local hippies happy is far more important than the city honoring its commitment toward minority participation in local construction projects. It's all about priorities I guess. Without a dozen or so local artists doodling and acting pretentious than the rest of the white people in this town might be forced to admit that they're living in a cowtown that is becoming increasingly populated by the darkies. The art scene in Kansas City paints a pretty picture that KC is a cultured town rather than pointing out the fact that nearly every white person in this city is merely one or (at most) two generations removed from jug bands and ho-downs (and meth) and I guess you could think of that as a public service or at least good PR.

  2. Ouch! A scathing indictment to say the least. Seriously though, the bitch that I see is not about keeping a bunch of local Art Institute white-belt wearing tight pants pussy-boy JoCo born tortured artists in their soy lattes. It's about the fact that by law, the city is required to spend 1% of the budget on new public buildings on public artwork. Whether or not you like the art chosen is not the issue, it's about WHO gets chosen and WHERE they're from. With a $300 million arena going in and a theoretical $3 million required to be spent on artwork, don't you think SOME of it should go to someone around here. However you personally feel about artists, Kansas City, and the "local art scene", its an undeniable fact that there are some people around here qualified to do public artwork.
