The staff at a local Kansas City nightclub quit in protest after a co-worker was shot. Typically, the new hip-hop format brought in cash and carnage. Whereas most rap music is safely confined to the headphones of white kids who hate their parents, whenever you play the music in public there is bound to be some kind of gunplay. So I guess you could say that hip-hop is a good business . . . if your business is contributing to death and collecting profits and you aren't qualified enough to work at a tobacco company.

I realize that I'm not the "target demographic" for hip-hop. I am completely cool with that.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm NOT cool with is that everytime I try to explain to people why I hate rap music, I sound just like my dad explaining why he hated rock & roll.
But at least rock & roll never spurred any killings. Except for those Hell's Angels killing those folks at Altamont while serving as the Rolling Stones "bodyguards".
Never mind. Guess I don't have a point after all. My bad!
X-Man is right that there isn't any self-destructive fratricide in rock music.
ReplyDeleteRap music has long been a bastardization of the urban music that it was spawned from. It is time for people of color to boycott its presence NOT just the people that aren't its target audience.
Maybe that will change the messages and the music's direction. Maybe what is needed are some young white sociopaths to wreak destruction in the names of TUPAC and BIGGIE SMALLS.
