  1. The grand jury showing their teeth. This will work to keep amusement parks safer in Kansas hopefully.

Although I wish they would appropriate more regulation and mandate inspections.

Pray for the family and hope this helps them find closure and peace. This was an awful tragedy for them and for Kansas.

  3. So they're charging a 29 old executive who was 27 at the time of the accident? Does anybody think he really had any say over how the slide was run?

Why don't they charge the UG officials who demanded the "safety wires" and polls that led to the accident?

  9. Caleb's dad is Kansas state Rep. Scott Schwab.

"In response to Caleb's death and the realization that few regulations governed amusement park safety, the Kansas Legislature took up a bill that would require more oversight of water parks and tougher penalties for safety violations.

New provisions — daily inspections and daily fines for each day a violation exists — were meant to replace lax oversight that existed at the time Caleb died. Scott Schwab, often a critic of burdensome regulation, supported the measure along with his House colleagues."

They are the ones who tinkered with the ride's design.

  13. When opened in 2014 the age requirement was 14 to ride. It was changed to 10 later. I had a friend who worked on this slide, she said it was constantly getting shut down for repair/maintenance , and that the scales would mess up all the time.

  23. Justice For Caleb3/23/18, 5:39 PM

For all those who are saying the man doesn't deserve the indcitment.

here's a look at part of the reason why he is facing these charges:

Whistle-blowers from within Schlitterbahn told investigators that water park officials covered up similar incidents in the past, according to the indictment. Experts found physical evidence indicating that, in the past, other rafts had gone airborne and collided with the overhead hoops and netting.

    ReplyDelete
  24. A lot of people and the some news station showed the blood stain that was visible for miles and from the highway. This was a horrible incident. Hope there is justice for the family.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Unless they publish pics. of the kid with his head lopped off it didn't happen. More likely only a severely severed neck and the jugular was hit. The word decapitation is like the word maimed it just makes a more sensational headline.

    ReplyDelete
  26. @5:48 - You need to stop doing damage control.

The autopsy reported that Caleb was decapitated. Your constant lying doesn't make it true and lessens the damage that was done to the family. Shame on you!

  28. PLEASE KEEP 2 THINGS IN MIND AS THIS UNFOLDS

    1) Newly elected Wyandotte County Prosecuting Attorney Mark Dupree is eager to make some sensational headlines.

    2) Remember that on the day of the horrific accident, the amusement park was hosting local/state politicos as a political favor. Free admission, food, etc. The boy who lost his life was the son of a KS State Representative.
If you're going to bite the hand that feeds you, don't take advantage of freebies.

  32. really feels like some major scapegoating going on here. You're telling me an "executive" that was 27 at the time is responsible for the decisions of a multinational global corporation? Very awful public shaming.

  33. All about taking other people’s money

    ReplyDelete
  34. I look forward to finding out how a 27 year old was vested with such decision making authority that he could be found guilty of criminal negligence. Maybe he was told to do X but he did Y and that led directly to the kid's death. But otherwise, it likely is scapegoating. If there is criminality involved, it is one of the higher ups, or perhaps a do nothing state agency.

    1. My thoughts too, 7:23. The child’s death was horrible, but I can’t imagine this 20-something fellow acted with any sort of malice or criminal intent.

  36. The Henry Family of Texas, the owners of Schlitterbahn, and one of whom rushed the design and construction of Verruckt to make the airing of a Travel Channel documentary, have been heavy donors to the GOP for many years.

That should go a long way to explaining why the only indictment has been against a local Manager.

  43. So,, let me get this straight,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

the Designers, Architects & Engineers aren't at all responsible for designing this thing with such a STEEP slope / fall as to cause the rafts to become airborne ????

That'd be like holding the person responsible who organized the JULY 1981, Square Dance at the , Hyatt Regency Skywalk collapse here in Kansas city, Missouri, for those who were around and old enough to remember .

Or another way of looking at it, the pilots of the SPACE SHUTTLE Challenger are responsible for the way the tiles were manufactured back during the 1985 space shuttle disaster, for those old enough to remember that.

I wanna know why the Architects & Designers , Engineers aren't being held liable ?????????????????????????

    ReplyDelete
  44. Nothing says success like a high school drop out running your design engineering.

  45. Read this story from Fox4.

    Many details revealed.

Of course a reporter there went to high school in Great Bend with Scott Schwab. Good for the station to break convention and do a LONG detailed news story!!

    http://fox4kc.com/2018/03/23/court-documents-detail-allegations-of-negligence-in-design-of-schlitterbahn-water-slide-that-killed-10-year-old/

But yes I agree with so many other commenters in our community--the grand jury jumped the shark by not ALSO indicting the Gang of Five, the Design Review Committee at UG.

They mandated the untested hoop and net guillotine system. Which Jeff Henry, the high school dropout loser son of the Henry family, owners of Schlitterbahn, then conveniently ignored for awhile.

as detailed in the Fox4 story.

Wyandotte County designed the guillotine, then Henry family and crooked employees covered up the problems it caused. UG police refuse to report on it, because they are funded by UG. Coverup!! And yes, a county CAN be sued. And should have been. But who was on the grand jury? All taxpayers of Wyandotte County!

  46. What about ALL the LOCAL TV News Stations, Anchors & reporters who were all too Anxious to promote this thing on their TV Stations here in Kansas City ?????

I remember their TV Commercials that they were PAID lots of Money to promote this SLIDE, shouldn't they too be held liable & responsible and some News Anchors & Reporters be going to Prison for Promoting this death Trap for PROFIT ????????????????????

The same TV News Anchors & Reporters who are sooo EAGER and Anxious to promote anything & everything that KCMO Mayor SLY JAMES does that turns out to be a Disaster for the citizens of this city , on both sides of the state line, those news anchors & reporters !!!

The same Clueless Brainless KC News Anchors & Reporters ( those who migrated here to KC from other areas of the country) who promoted that SLY JAMES Phony TOY TRAIN that's turned out to be a DISASTER !!

That toy train that the VOTERS voited NO for and that Corrupt KCMO Mayor SLY JAMES went ahead with anyway - - why isn't the News Media Anchors & reporters all over that why the Mayor constantly goes against the VOTES of the voters ?????
