Ethics Commission clears Justus; No conflict of interest in KCI terminal selection
Today the City’s Ethics Commission voted unanimously that there is no conflict of interest for Councilmember Jolie Justus to serve as a member of the selection committee that will recommend a terminal development proposal.
Justus requested the ruling after learning last week of concerns about previous work her law firm had performed for one of the proposers.
A few days ago, the City Attorney issued an informal advisory opinion clearing Justus. The Ethics Commission adopted that memo as a formal opinion today, as well as dismissing a complaint filed by a member of the public.
Justus has also received opinions indicating that no conflict exists from her law firm and from the outside lawyers hired by the City Council for the terminal development procurement process.
“I requested the opinion from the Ethics Commission to make absolutely sure there was no cloud over this process,” said Justus. “We have worked very hard to make sure we get this right for Kansas City and today’s decision confirms what I knew all along, that there is no conflict of interest.”
This decision clears the City’s KCI Terminal Development Selection Committee to start deliberations next week.
