We know that Kansas City denizens are already planning their weekend, so here's one more local attraction for visitors who aren't afraid of enduring a few rounds of gunfire that have recently plagued the 18th & Vine jazz district . . .
New museum exhibit in Kansas City emphasizes civil rights

"KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri native and artist Sonié Joi Ruffin motions to the artwork behind her: a bronze statue of Louis Armstrong playing his trumpet, a handwritten copy of the Emancipation Proclamation on papyrus and a penciled canvas peppered with the N-word . . . The show is set up in chronological order of the civil rights movement, starting with slavery and ending with Black Lives Matter, and features pieces by local and national artists."
And whist the cultural consideration of this exhibit could be taken into account . . . Let's be realistic, a divisive bit of protest art might not draw a big crowd. This direction which signals the bent of 18th & Vine management could signal one of many reasons that $27 million worth of City Hall funding has been, thankfully, stalled.

ReplyDeleteNo thanks to Councilmen Reed and Lucas, enough others on the Council apparently got a grip on reality and ask the question-- "Why would the city spend another $27 million on this failed project?"
ReplyDeleteThe key word in the question is "CITY"----as in, why must the city bankroll this district which has failed to thrive despite previous years of heavy subsidy.
I know there's an argument to be made that this would be yet one of many city subsidized projects, but the 18th and Vine history of failure should preclude more money chasing a sinkhole here.
Now why in the hell would the people who really pay for this shit at 18th & Vine want to pump 27 million into it when it is used to promote black propaganda? Where do white people, asians, Native Americans or police officers go to protest and proclaim that their lives matter JUST AS MUCH? Are the tax payers going to have to build them all a little failed tourist trap to spew what is really their hatred for other races? Wake the fuck up Kansas City and stop tolerating this "lipstick on a pig" way of doing things in this town.

ReplyDeleteI definitely understand the desire to not throw good money after bad. What I find interesting is the city all of a sudden finds fiscal restraint/religion when it comes to Eastside improvements.
