Kansas City media was quick to report local arguments against Bishop Finn's new gig in Nebraska and the strident criticism from locals who hounded the cleric throughout the Midwest.
The arguments resonated with Kansas City media watchers concerned about the Church's penchant to relocate priests who have encountered problems.
However . . . A faith community leader in Cornhusker State is addressing the criticism head on and Kansas City newsies have failed to report this call to forgiveness.

"In December of 2015, I announced that Bishop Robert Finn, the former bishop of Kansas City, Missouri, would serve as the chaplain to a community of religious sisters, his long-time friends, in the Diocese of Lincoln. In 2012, Bishop Finn was convicted of a misdemeanor for failing to report a priest in possession of child pornography.
"Because of serious acts of negligence under his leadership, Bishop Finn faced serious penalties. He faced a criminal court, and served the sentence he was given. He resigned his leadership position in the Church. He also accepted responsibility for his actions, and he has expressed sincere regret to those whom his negligence may have harmed.
"Justice required serious consequences, and justice was served. There is a point, however, when demands for justice can become something much less worthy, and far less worthwhile."
Readers and the faithful must judge for themselves who is right or wrong but realize that local media rarely follows up on these stores that are more complicated than headlines or talking points.

As a Catholic I'm appalled and ashamed of my church. Bishop Finn should have been defrocked.

As a Catholic, I'm embarrassed by 5:58. Besides the fact that anyone who took the time to learn about what really happened knows that Bishop Finn was not guilty of 90% of what is routinely said about him, like so many others 5:58 refuses to practice basic Christian charity and forgiveness. I suppose the Year of Mercy does not apply to those who need it. Ironic that again Bishop Finn is the example, having forgiven those who falsely accused him and who continue to abuse him in the press through their sinful ignorance.

ReplyDeleteThe more nuanced and mystical views of Buddhism, Hinduism and those of the Orient, are, in my opinion, more rational, yet, still aspire to correct our behavior in this life in preparation for the inevitable. Dualistic societies find solace in religion and much of that solace leads to insights that are sincere and real to the followers of said religions.
Religion is only evil in pursuit of evil. If you are sure YOUR God can kick my God's ass, or YOUR way to heaven or nirvana requires my destruction, then YOUR religion is in pursuit of evil.
It's mostly a personal, ethereal experience now in America, in which ecclesiastical concerns are secondary to a subjective appreciation of "God". Catholics are no better or worse than any other.
If you want to hate on Religion, then look to the "Greatest Murder Machine In History". Islam.

ReplyDeleteNot true 10:20. He publicly accepted responsibility for what he did and was tagged by others and the media with responsibility for a host of things he did not do. He was "found guilty" (not convicted) of a misdemeanor failure to report suspected child abuse during the time Ratigan was staying with the Sisters in Independence. He was found NOT guilty of failure to report when the child porn was found on the computer. Moreover, there was never a report or accusation of child abuse during Ratigan's stay in Independence, thus he was found guilty of failure to report something that never existed. He served his time and the entire case has been expunged from the record. From a legal standpoint, it never happened.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile, Finn put into place the most comprehensive child protection system in the country that has become a model for other Dioceses and denominations. Interestingly, the public schools have shown no interest in spite of the fact that abuse incidents in public school have been shown to be as high as 100x that of Catholic schools and parishes. It appears the school unions and bureaucracy is even more of a good ol boys club than the Catholic hierarchy.

I do agree that Bishop Finn has addressed his being found guilty and has apologized and served the courts sentence. He is now free to be a normal citizen again. This never ending hatred of this man expressed by SNAP and the usually not church going public, including fallen away catholics is getting very tiring. Ignorance is boring, stop being ignorant. If you had resigned from a director level in your company then taken a job serving meals in the company cafferteria you'd realize how far this man has fallen but he still loves and respects God enough to find a place to help others.
