More than anybody Leon's Thriftway near Paseo benefited from the initial effort this blog publicized FIRST, bigger and better than anybody else in KCMO . . . And they deserved the bump because they clerks at the store have always been nice to my grandma over the past 25 years she has been shopping at the place.
As the effort continues, organizers hope to raise awareness about other African-American owned biz in town . . . Check KC Black Business for more deets.

ReplyDeleteWhy not encourage buying local all the time no matter what race or ethnicity the owner or operator is. Seems to me that "buying black" is just another way to differentiate and isolate the African American community from everyone else. It's just like having Miss Black America and all of the other isolation events. Join together in all business and activities and stop creating a race issue every other chance that comes up.

ReplyDeleteSo this is basically a boycott, based entirely on race. What if Walmart had a (Serve only white people day)? They would be charged by the justice department for a litany of civil rights violations. What about the white owned businesses in high crime (predominately black areas) . They serve the black community day in day out, yet they will be penalized for a day, based entirely on race. Nothing like isolating yourself while demanding inclusiveness and equality.

ReplyDeleteHow powerful! Monday is a slow shopping day anyway. They've already rooted through stores over the weekend and stocked up on their boon chow, grape drank and hair grease. If they want to make a statement, boycott white businesses all the time. I might actually take up shopping as a hobby then.

Unfortunately, "Buy Black" only continues to widen the already polarized rift between black and white. It's not helpful.
