Will deliver over 22,000 petition signatures in support of Colleen Simon
Kansas City, MO — Local Catholics are asking Robert Finn, the bishop of the Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese, to apologize and rehire Colleen Simon, who was fired from her job at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church’s food bank when it was publicly revealed that she was married to another woman.
Over 22,000 people have signed onto the petition reading:
At a time when Pope Francis and leading bishops are calling for a new tone, it is cruel and discriminatory to fire a dedicated Christian servant because she is in a loving, committed relationship with another woman. We call on you to apologize to Colleen Simon and allow her to resume her work helping the needy in Kansas City.

The Diocese said in its statement that it looks forward to an "amicable resolution." Here's a chance to save the parishoners money and resolve the situation. Why not give her her job back in a technical sense--no ministry and just food pantry? Stop being heartless, Bishop Finn. The woman is a cancer survivor, an excellent worker, and genuinely cares about serving the poor.
ReplyDeleteFYI--they're not allowed to fire technical workers for being gay. They thought they could get away with this because Colleen Simon was engaged in teaching parishoners what poverty means. Should she really be punished for that? A gay bookkeeper at the Church cannot be fired for being gay--so why should a food pantry worker who also teaches about the Church's anti-poverty mission be fired??

3:30: 3:36 is right. Under current Missouri law there is no anti-discrimination protection for gays, lesbians, etc. That's why her case is premised on fraud--i.e., the church knew she was gay and fired her for her inadvertent public outing.
