Political correctness, management incompetence and merchant fear killed Bannister Mall and left an economic pothole in the area that only massive TIF subsidy is now working to address.

Councilman Reed is concerned about the "use of pepper spray" on youths and wants them to be treated "respectfully.

The crowds have grown noticably at the park on Saturday nights since school started, police said.
“It’s been crazy,” said police Sgt. Joey Roberts, who supervises the mounted patrol unit. “Last week at one time in the park there were 200-plus kids.”
Roberts said problems started earlier than usual Saturday night.
“Typically, we don’t have problems until 8 or 9 p.m.,” he said. “But (Saturday) night it started as early as 6 p.m. with kids shadow boxing, running in the streets and blocking sidewalks.”

Whites can't keep running because we can't sell our houses and there isn't one apt. complex in the city that's safe because of Section 8. I think it's time to stop accepting excuses from the cops and politicians - they need to treat blacks as harshly as they would 200 white kids having a riot. Pepper spray just seemed to make it a little more fun - nightsticks, tazers and jail would be a start - and a promise to do it again next weekend if necessary.

The Plaza is fading. What many people forget or don’t know is that the Plaza wasn’t built to be a tourist attraction; it was built to be a local shopping center. Despite its nice architecture, it will meet the same fate as other local shopping centers like Bannister, The Landing and Ward Pkwy. Once the wrong element invades, which it has, it will fall into ruin sooner than later. I work in a very large company here in the metro, and I hear lots of people say that they rarely, if ever, go to the Plaza anymore.

ReplyDeleteI have a 17 year old daughter and live in Brookside. My daughter and her friends all know that they are not permitted to be on the Plaza after 9PM. Guess what, they are not on the Plaza after 9PM. Plans for a movie outing? They make sure they are off the Plaza by going to a matinee movie (cheaper price also).
Looking for something to do later, they get together at someone's house for a movie, or they go bowling, or during the school year, they go to a High School game and out for pizza, or back to someone's house.
This is not hard, people..it's called being a responsible parent, setting boundaries, raising children who know the difference between right and wrong, and enforcing rules.
The city is NOT RESPONSIBLE for taking care of your children and teenagers. The city is NOT RESPONSIBLE for paying for activities for 'bored kids'. Your kids are bored?, they can work on homework, or do chores around the house. I guarantee you, they won't say they are bored again.
These brats have ruined the Plaza for adults looking for a nice evening out with a movie or dinner. I'm so sick of this crap, I could scream.
The Internet will provide the quality and clarity in communication, resulting in real positive action required to solve problems such as this.

We will have a series of town hall meetings where the public can give us their ideas, and produce quality options for kids at minimal cost to the taxpayer. Activities such as basketball, dancing, and having fun have been proven to be incredibly effective in other city's, and to be competitive we'll need to step up our game.
