KCPD Chief Forté restated an interesting position this afternoon during a presser touting the Kansas City ShotSpotter System.
Basically, Chief Forté explained that current Kansas City homicide numbers have been consistent through the years AND the local murder count can be tied to instances of social unrest.
For instance, the Chief noted an upswing in Kansas City homicides after the 1993 Rodney King verdict along with the FIRST instance of Kansas City homicides totaling more than 100 in the aftermath of the 1968 MLK riots.
Giving serious consideration to this assertion . . .

Remember that one of the biggest political rallies in Kansas City, led by Mayor Sly on the Country Club Plaza, was an outpouring of frustration over the Trayvon Martin shooting.
Amid this current Summer of increased homicides in Kansas City, we live with the specter of social unrest possibly powering even more local frustration and the threat of increased violence.

ReplyDeleteIt was interesting listening to KMBZ this morning, where their local midday talk guy just decided Zimmerman was justified.... saying no evidence against him. CLearly he didn't watch the testimony. Its interesting that the usual media conservatives side with Zimmerman. Maybe they spend too much time watching OTHER conservative media.

People didn't know the King verdict would erupt into a full scale riot and they were unprepared. Don't make the same mistake this time. Cook Time: 20 min
Difficulty: Easy
Ingredients Add to grocery list
4 cups vegetable oil
8 (8-ounce) chunks of human flesh, about 1-inch thick
1 1/4 teaspoons salt
1 1/4 teaspoons freshly ground black pepper
3 teaspoon garlic powder
1 pinch cayenne pepper
1 pinch celery seeds
2/3 cup buttermilk
1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
Directions
Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350 degrees F.
Arrange the people chops in a large shallow dish. Season each person chop, on both sides, with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, cayenne pepper and celery seeds. Pour the buttermilk over the chops and turn to coat.
Place flour into a large shallow dish. Dip each person chop into the flour mixture and coat well, shaking off the excess.
Using tongs, gently lower the chops into the deep skillet in batches if necessary. Fry for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown, turning once. Transfer chops to a paper towel-lined pate to drain. Serve hot.

The prosecutor in this case should have lowered the charges to something they could prove, like involuntary manslaughter. There are some underlying issues that nobody wants to tackle, but the entire country need to address culturally. Until we have that adult discussion, we're all at the whim of emotionally charged, racially motivated crimes.

Interestingly, when I was a young person growing up in the South in the 1950's and 1960's the people who threatened violence if they did not get their way in a trial wore white robes and burned crosses--now they are on the faculty of the Department of Multicultural Studies at Duke University. "The more things change, the more they remain the same." If Zimmerman is acquitted and we do have a national wave of race riots in response, responsibility for this disaster will rest heavily with the national press corps for the inflamatory and sensationalistic way that they have covered the Trayvon Martin tragedy. Whether you think Zimmerman is guilty or not, the national media did not have to keep inflaming public passions by repeatedly "dumping fuel on the fire." Right now, I think that most of the national press corps deserves "The Atlanta Race Riot of 1906 Award for Criminally Irresponsible Behavior on the Part of People in the Media." Take care. ReplyDeleteI think that given the testimony of the young lady who was caught up lying over and over again on the stand which was perfectly acceptable because she couldn't read cursive and without checking to see if that was the case for ALL her classmates it was certainly white america at fault, it would have been different if she would have gone to and graduated from an inner city school here in KC? and the evidence they have fought so hard to exclude about young trayvon and the fact that the media has worked diligently on showing that it may or may not have been a factor that Zimmerman was half white... he should have walked himself into the court room and just said he was there for sentencing.
