Aaron Hernandez, formerly of the New England Patriots, ended his NFL career this week. Hernandez, today, was charged with multiple gun charges and, oh yeah, a little extra dilly, murder. The judge today said no bond for Mr. Hernandez. Translation: Aaron will spend the next one to two years in custody awaiting trial. Hernandez, only in his twenties, received another kick to the nuts today when the Patriots fired him from the team. Translation: the hierarchy of the Patriots having reviewed the charges and, most likely, much of the evidence; has done some really bad things, possibly even the murder itself. Translation: The New England front office thinks he is guilty and is not standing behind him at all. It’s been a tough year for Boston. Their beloved Red Sox have failed to get in the World Series the last couple of years, the New England Patriots are a fading former perennial Super Bowl team that just this year has lost Rob Gronkowski and Wes Welker and now, Aaron Hernandez. If you aren’t following the score, that’s their top three receivers. Taking these things into consideration, it likely means that the Patriots probably won’t see a Super Bowl any time soon and may miss the playoffs altogether for the first time in a million years. Not only that, their magic number this year was ten and a half wins. That might be free money if you go out to Vegas and bet against them. To add more misery, superstar quarterback Tom Brady, now in his thirties and having just built his multi-million dollar dream home out in Bel Air, CA; may just decide that this will be his final season with all this commotion going on and having no one to throw the ball to. Poor Boston, they just lost the Stanley Cup to Chicago, oh and let’s not forget that bombing incident a couple months back. What a difference a couple years can make, huh? Almost forgot, the Boston Celtics have fallen apart, and their coach just quit. Man, talk about bad times, all this makes Independence, Missouri seem like a positive place to be.

Playing in the NFL can be murder. The list is getting longer and longer of major crimes committed by NFL stars on a regular basis. Let’s put the over one hundred DUI’s racked up by various NFL players over the last couple years aside. What we are left with are wife beatings, assaults on women in bars and in homes, constant drug violations, dog fights and major drug deals. For example, Chicago Wide Receiver was recently indicted for a major conspiracy to distribute cocaine a couple years ago, now this has sort of been swept under the rug by the NFL, likely due to the other NFL players that would be implicated in this case. That brings us to the big ‘M’s; murder and mayhem. That list is getting longer and longer. It started with OJ Simpson, was followed Ray Lewis and now includes guys like Jovan Belcher and Aaron Hernandez. Don’t forget superstar quarterback ‘Big’ Ben Roethlisberger was nearly indicted for rape just over a year ago.

Our Kansas City Chiefs, not to be outdone, have been right in the thick of things, the nineties Chiefs was as wild a team as any out there today. Led by Dale Carter’s gun battles in Westport, drug deals and stolen car rings headed up by then kick returner Tamarick Vanover, we even got a white guy into the act, defensive end and city leader Joe Phillips is still a fugitive on the run today for several crimes. Add in Larry Johnson’s multiple assault cases and last season’s murder-suicide by Belcher and the Chiefs are certainly keeping up with the Joneses.

I suppose, one could write one of those coffee table books with photos, some graphic, over all the major crimes committed by NFL players over the last couple of decades. The question literally jumps out at you, why so much crime now?

The NFL is the biggest entertainment stage on the planet, no argument. Even new and average players make over a half-million dollars a year or more. That being said, good players in just their second or third seasons are making a million a season or even more. So, what’s the reason for the incredibly bad behavior?

This is all I can come up with, sports fans. Number one, I think there is a lack of any real education. Let me explain, because football is so important, it over-rides college and even high school education in importance. Therefore, most students who are headed towards college football are made to believe they don’t need to really go to class or do any real schooling. The truth is they don’t. The other part of the equation is that most of these young men are from low income backgrounds and all they are thinking about is the fast cars, cool pad, gold chains and for some odd reason, being a ‘gangsta’ or acting like a ‘gangsta’. Without argument rap and hip hop music being the constant sermon these young players hear on a daily basis certainly doesn’t help matters.

Isn’t it odd that these young men, have worked so hard physically and mentally to play this sport at such a high level, yet so many of them still feel like the need the respect of their street-level ‘peers’ to truly be respected? They’ve still got to run with the crew, be the big dog at all the area dance clubs, act tough on the street, and far too often still somehow be connected to the drug world. Yes, unfortunately, the players who do the most damage are minorities. To be fair, most NFL players are of color. Then again, the white players overall are involved in far less criminal activities per capita. This goes back to education and family background.

One would think on the biggest entertainment stage there is and what is arguably the toughest professional sport out there, that much of the above would be unnecessary. Bottom line, look for Tim Tebow at tight end this fall for the New England Patriots. Maybe with Tebow’s connection to the Lord, he will be able to fix things for the Patriots. Ya think?
