CONGRESSMAN CLEAVER BIKES VAN BRUNT & BRUSH CREEK TRAILS IN KANSAS CITY!!!

Yesterday Kansas City Congressman Cleaver participated in a bike ride to showcase the region’s commitment to pedestrian and bicycle friendly streets.

Cycling is often a controversial issue on this blog but this seemed like mostly a white hat event. We liked the photos so we wanted to share . . .

Also, click this link read the rest of the Congressman E.C. From D.C. letter.

BURNING CALORIES INSTEAD OF FOSSIL FUEL

Congressman Blumenauer joined us on a short bike ride along the Van Brunt and Brush Creek trails in Kansas City. The 3.2-mile Van Brunt trail was completed last year and is a part of a network of on-and off-road bicycle and pedestrian facilities spreading across the entire region.

The Kansas City region’s long-range transportation plan promotes lots of options – active options. They include facilities for bikers and walkers. It’s a great way to get the family out together to enjoy a beautiful day and a wonderful way to stay healthy.

Congressman Blumenauer and Congressman Cleaver get their ‘official’ biker shirts from KC Bicycle and Pedestrian Coordinator, Deb Ridgway (middle)

Congressman Blumenauer is a national champion for bicycle and pedestrian issues, and chairs the Democratic Caucus’ Livable Communities Task Force. It was a wonderful chance to showcase our region’s commitment to reducing dependence on oil and increasing good health.

  12. What kind of tools wear suits while riding a bike? How out of touch can you be? How tone-deaf can you be? Just without a clue. The epitome of people who think they are entitled.

  13. In case a serious discussion is still possible on TKC . . .

I don't mind at all cities spending on bike/hike trails in the interest of public health. But I think we are fooling ourselves if we think the sport/hobby of cycling is going to have any significant effect on our "dependance on oil," foreign or domestic.

Some editorial writer at the Star also imagines thousands upon thousands of people biking to work and all over town if only the city would spend untold millions on special lanes and paths to make streets bicycle-friendly.

    Why?

    1. Bicycling is a strenuous activity. You should to build yourself into pretty good shape before you attempt a ride of any distance, and even then, there are people who can never get themselves in that kind of shape.

    2. It can only be done when the weather cooperates. In KC, it tends to rain and snow. It also gets brutally hot and brutally cold (try showing up at the office in a suit after you've biked in 10 miles on an 80-degree morning). And it also gets too windy for safe biking.

    3. While it would be a good idea to jump on a bike instead of a car to run to the grocery store for a gallon of milk, try loading a week's worth of groceries on a bike.
