A unilateral and DANGEROUS Kansas City traffic initiative has encountered a great deal of push back on local streets.
To wit . . .
URBAN CORE OUTRAGE OVER STOPLIGHT REMOVAL HAS SPARKED EVEN MORE MAINSTREAM MEDIA REPORTING AND REPEATED CALLS TO REVERSE THE HORRIBLE KANSAS CITY DECISION!!!
Take a look at two recent reports . . .
Fox4: Neighbors Try to Stop Removal of Traffic Lights
KSHB: In the last two weeks, city workers started replacing traffic lights with stop signs at 37 intersections where signals have been for decades. Residents are not happy about the changes.
The reaction against this City Hall move has blasted not only the lack of neighborhood and community input but also the complete lack of transparency on this issue from local leaders.
Previously . . .
Initial urban core and Kansas City reaction put the rage against this program on blast.
And then . . . Money quotes and complaints about City Hall transparency led our discussion of this misguided effort over the weekend.
Developing . . .
I guess it depends on the intersection, but this "resident" is very pleased with the change at 59th and the Paseo.
ReplyDeleteThat intersection used to jam up with people trying to make left turns. Traffic runs much more smoothly through there now.
You are crazier than hell, over the weekend there has been 3 accidents at this intersection. Cars are running the stop signs.
DeleteAlso, beware of anecdotal evidence such as "There was an accident at St. John and Van Brunt last Tuesday."
ReplyDeleteYou've got to compare that to the accidents that happened there when there were stoplights, and common sense should tell you it was more than zero.
You might also ask those Nervous Nellies at 59th and Wornall how many accidents happen at 59th and Oak a few blocks away, and that has long been a four-way stop.
FYI, in my experience going east/west on 59th, that light at Wornall seemed interminable.

I have driven through at least six of these and everyone of them still has the traffic light which is flashing red along with the new stop signs. Appears to me that unless you have an IQ below 70, the visual is plenty of.notice that something has changed. Some people just like to bitch...
DeleteCity Planners are trying to kill North East.
ReplyDeleteSly sold us out.
City planners are trying to kill northeast? Been through here, its already dead. We are now the"international market zone". Thank you.funkhouser.
ReplyDeleteSly does what he wants when he wants you elected him,how do you like him now.
ReplyDeleteNot sure if it was Funkhouser who did that, "frustrated in NE" or if it was the relatively cheap and available housing in the area.
ReplyDeleteAnd 7:40 hit it on the head. If City Hall handed out free vanilla ice cream cones, some people would bitch because it wasn't chocolate.
Let's take a deep breath and see how this plays out. My guess is that we won't need all the traffic lights we have, especially in those areas where you get to drive a block before stopping at the next light.
The inconvenient truth is KC MO City leadership and all the departments trickling down to the street worker are totally dysfunctional at every level.
ReplyDelete"Oh were so sorry we didn't inform the citizens and neighborhoods"
Fucking liars and incompetents trying to cover their asses.
Amazing--getting imput after the fact. And 7:40, a lot of drivers seem to have an IQ below 70, and they're on their phones, texting, eating, shaving, etc. while driving.
ReplyDeleteSo they are just as likely to run a traffic light as a four-way stop.
ReplyDeleteYou expect City Hall to cure stupidity?
Hey, "They lie"! Exactly how was the city supposed to inform each and every citizen about this change?
ReplyDeleteAnd how stupid do you have to be to have to be told in advance what a flashing red and stop sign mean?

I'm sure that if you get all your information from Tony, you are convinced beyond reason that city government is dysfunctional at all levels.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, this was the guy who screamed and cried when "city hall" didn't clear off a quarter-inch snowfall last winter fast enough to suit him.
As far as Tony's previous "money quote," Bushnell was whining that the Northeast was being unfairly picked on because five of these changes were proposed for a 1.2 mile radius around some point on St. John.
ReplyDeleteReally? Well, draw a 1.2 mile radius from the intersection of Oak and Meyer and count the new four-way stops.
And just in case Bushnell seldom leaves the Northeast, all these changes are WEST OF TROOST.
8:44- 37 changes = a maximum of 37 neighborhoods to notify. How hard is that?
ReplyDeleteDemory's statement that changes in "federal standards REQUIRE" the signals to be removed is more smoke screens and horseshit.
ReplyDeleteThe Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices does indeed provide a set of criteria for analyzing control requirements at intersections. However, it also ALWAYS allows and defers to the local authority in the exercise of discretion in determining appropriate controls. In other words, the City's engineers could say that, based on their engineering judgment, in their opinion the signalized controls are appropriate for these intersections and then just left them alone.
Another communications gaffe by Public Works (remember the sycamores?). When with McIntyre learn?
ReplyDeleteStoplight changes at 63rd & Oak, Meyer & Oak and Gregory & Oak are foolhardy.
ReplyDeleteBrookside and Waldo were built as walkable communities. There are schools in the areas that have a lot of foot traffic. This morning the morning sun caused glare (per usual) on my windscreen. It was difficult to see the pedestrians . Many were school kids and parents walking to school. A whole lot of elderly people walking their dogs, runners, kids on bikes and people walking to bus stops. Stoplights help to keep walkers safe.
If the lights need to flash then let it be during the down-times.
####$$$$###$$$$%%%%%
I am concerned with all foolishness across the city that jeopardizes residents of our city
The old 4Th district put Mayor James in office, we still live here even though we have new districts. We can vote him out.
I live in BKS and i LOVE the stop signs!!! I hated waiting at the lights for no reason when traffic was low. As a walker, i dont feel unsafe at all crossing these intersections; im maybe a bit more cautious but no big deal.
DeleteI say good job city hall.
Just stop at the stop sign, dumbass. IF everyone stops, it slows down the freeway speed traffic and makes it flow better.
ReplyDelete"I can see pedestrians without a red light"
What a fucking dipshit. Turn in your license, grandma.
Right, only people in 37 neighborhoods were affected. Absolutely nobody else drives through those neighborhoods.
ReplyDeleteYou think I fell off the turnip truck?
Once again, if you're too damned dumb to know what a stop sign and a flashing red means, it wouldn't have helped much if Sly James himself came to your front door to tell you about it.
And to the person who complained that somehow, stop signs made the glare on his/her windshield more dangerous, you ever think of wearing a pair of polarized shades?
Hey, "thin margin," you obviously haven't been caught at 63rd and Oak through an entire light changes behind a couple of people trying to turn left.
ReplyDeleteThat won't happen any more at a four-way stop, unless you are one of those too dumb to wait your turn.
The problem at 59th and Wornall is that Wornall traffic doesn't stop. If you are going westbound on 59th wanting to turn Right onto Wornall, and the car in front of you is either turning left or going straight, the traffic on Wornall doesn't stop at all. During afternoon rush hour it's a 5 minute wait for traffic to clear.
ReplyDeleteI just tried to call Public Works and complain-they are not answering their phone. You can leave a message and they will allegedly get back to you. Yea, right.
Bitch and whine. Whine and bitch. You whined that people run stop signs. But why do you think we have red light cameras? Could it be that you idiots can't figure them out either?
ReplyDeleteFor you whiners, take the bus.
Ummm, anonymous? I would say the answer to that would be don't use 59th.
ReplyDeleteAnd that should be a good thing for those people living along 59th who bitch about traffic from outside the neighborhood so much that they got speed bumps installed.
Yes, 9:18, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices does give local authority some leeway.
ReplyDeleteBut then again, let's realize that traffic patterns tend to change as living patterns change.
What might have been necessary at a particular intersection in 1972 might not be needed in 2012.
This city is so fucked up. The politicians and residents are just stupid. And, don't worry, I'm moving.
ReplyDeleteSo 11:39- you telling me that every light that's being changed was installed prior to 1972? And that the City compared the traffic patterns at the time those lights were installed with the traffic patterns today and determined that they have changed so much that signalization is no longer beneficial? You and I both know that's horseshit.
ReplyDeleteThis is simply about money. The City Ned's to reduce maintenance expenses in the street budget to help pay for funds being diverted for other project (like the toy train). And these are the 37 they arbitrarily picked.
Turnip truck tumbler at 10:14- the issue is does the City have the courtesy to think of residents and ask for their input prior to taking an action that directly effects the quality of their lives on a daily basis. The answer, once again, is a resounding "No". That's what Sly James' City hall is telling you. He does not give a shit abou the quality of life fO th residents of this City. He only cares about taking care of the insiders, grifters, and those that can help him politically- and fuck doing the right thing because its th right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteTell City Hall to come downtown and take out ALL of those long cycle traffic lights. We don't need them nor do we want them. They can take them all to the urban core. We have volume intersections with 4 way stop signs and they work great.
ReplyDeleteDoesn't matter how many stop lights remain in neighborhoods, people are leaving faster then you can say "fat Black Mayor." Here comes the tumble weed. Last to leave please turn out the lights. Suburbs look better and better all the time. Nothing left but old people who will soon pass away and add tot he vacancy and blight in the community. Yes, all this over stop lights, closed schools, predatory lending, poor City service, XTREMELY POOR city representation, corruption, unkept promises, unnecessary tax increases, etc, etc. etc. Bring in all the downtown trains and other bullshit you want. I'm out!
ReplyDeleteHey genius at 5:22. Where did I say that every traffic light being removed was installed prior to 1972? I didn't. I was making a point that traffic patterns change over time and what was appropriate in the past may not be the best thing now.
ReplyDeleteBut since you know so much, tell me when these 37 lights were installed? What? You don't know? You mean for all you know, which is very little, they could have been installed in 1952?
Tell you what, though. If you'd care to educate yourself, I would wager that the majority of them (19 or more) have been there at least 40 years.
And for the sad sad fellow just boo-hooing because the city didn't tell him, grow up.
We couldn't get a pothole fixed if the city had to notify everybody who could possibly use the street that it was working on.
And what it boils down to is this: What we are talking about is the city replacing 37 stoplights with four-way stop signs.
That is hardly the worst threat to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness, but I do certainly hope it is the worst problem you ever have to face.
Grow up.
Now, for all those weeping and wailing over lost stoplights: You have lost your right ever to complain about the city wasting money.
ReplyDeleteAfter all, it's always all about you. What's $9 million when YOU even think, right or wrong, that you will suffer such terrible inconvenience as stopping at a stop sign instead of a stoplight?
dis nigga dont stop fo no motherfucker!
ReplyDeleteThe city is growing faster than most suburbs, dipshit. In fact, most of JoCo is shrinking, too.
ReplyDeleteYour bland "life" in "the Falls at Quail Run" is making you retarded.
